Joe Johnson is an upgrade over Martin. I would do Martin plus a 1st-rounder to get him. Maybe Martin plus Bud, but I would like to get a little more from their end to do that.

As for his higher salary, I'm not sure he'll bring a max contract, though he will cost more than Martin. But from where we are, you have to reach a little.

We aren't far away from contending; this, plus a decent MLE signing, and we're at least contending.

I, for one, don't care about how Bosh performs in bed. I'm more concerned about his skills on the court.

well for those that want to know,

    martin>johnson
    johnson>brooks

Even though JJ plays D better than Martin,Martin is younger, cheaper, better 3 pt shooter, Id rather have Martin.

Brooks is just to erratic, Id take Johnson

mute point. Cuban is going to get Johnson now that the chronicle told the whole world we are after bosh and johnson. Cuban reads our paper then goes out and gets the player we want.(butler/haywood)

isnt it tampering for Mavericks to be discussing sign and trade with Johnson?

doesnt matter, dirk is a loser, cursed, i dont know, but he just cant pull his team through ,adding johnson doesnt scare me. Cuban will make sure his mavs are always good, but they are not "great". They may even be better than us but thats not saying much.

I only wanted Johnson to get Bosh, but Bosh is 100% guaranteed bulls/heat so lets keep what we got.

The cavs are doing their best to keep James. They are discussing with the raptors for landing Bosh.

It's against the rules to talk to the FAs until 7/1.

You are thinking one sided. If a sign n trade was to happen, Martin is gone.

Isn't it obvious that the only reason we would be interested in Johnson would be to either 1. get Bosh here and/or 2. keep JJ out of NY so our picks have value? Morey would rather have Bosh/JJ, than to have KMart/expirings/young talent. And Morey would rather have JJ than to let NY have him.

And adding JJ to Brooks/Martin/Yao/Scola isn't necessarily a bad thing if all we have to give up is Ariza, Jeffries, and a future pick such as NY's 2012.

Wouldn't the Hawks want more than Ariza, Jeffries and the pick? I mean, if I was the Hawks' GM, I just lost my best player and highest scorer in one swoop and I'm doing him a favor by doing a S&T so he can get more money? I better get more (i.e. Martin) in return than Ariza, an expiring contract, and a draft pick that I might not be around to use.

They can take that, or watch JJ walk, and they get nothing. A sign and trade for JJ hasn't even been discussed until just recently.

From the Hawks perspective, they have only these options if JJ decides to leave and picks us as his preferred destination.

    1. Get nothing
    2. Get Ariza, Jefferies, and a draft pick

These are the same arguments on why it's better for Bosh to come to Houston via S&T because Toronto stands to lose him for nothing...and yet the two teams that has the reported "inside track" are teams that will sign him outright due to having massive capspace.

Could it be argued that Johnson is in a different situation, where he's not in the same tier as Wade/LeBron/Bosh, where he would want to lock up that final year to earn more money? Very possible but judging by how these FAs have handled themselves with the media, they aren't interested in helping their former teams one bit. "Why do I have to help the Hawks, when their fans would rather come to our home games and support the opposition, and boos me for calling them out on it?" Of course I know they can garner more money via S&T but I wouldn't be surprised if these same FAs will leave a good chunk of S&T money on the table come July 1st.

I think that JJ in Adelman's system is would make him more efficient, it would mostly limit him to Mid Range, cutting and driving. In Atlanta he had to do everything, because of his size he would also be called upon to post up. If he came here he would be put at SF (because of who we would have to send for him), he would also only need to shoot 3's if he was open from Bosh/Yao/Scola posting up, or if he had the hot hand. Putting him at SF would allow him to beat most SF's off picks and cuts/slashes. I'm not too sure that Bosh would be the best fit though, maybe if we're going after JJ, we should try and also get Josh Smith too, he has become much more efficient and would be a great compliment to Yao, it would also boost up our defense. By doing that you could also get away with going small when Yao is out, putting J-Hill, Scola, Hayes or Patterson at C and Smith at the PF.

In the interview earlier in the morning, Morey said that there are 6 or so plans heading into free agency. What if this is just plan D?

I think the amount of tampering going on this offseason is hilarious. We know -- and therefore the FAs know -- which teams are going after which players, even though the teams aren't allowed to talk about it. Security in the front offices of half the league have been breached and unnamed sources have spilled the beans everywhere on what each teams intends to do.

Of course, if the Rockets want to go after Johnson and want any chance of success, they need to signal it well before free agency starts -- and thus the 'leak.' It may actually be too late in the game, since Johnson has probably been thinking about a short list for quite some time already.
