Out of all the players in the NBA, he is probably the hardest to trade with his long contract and age.

The amazing part of this comment is this is what so many people believe. Does no one remember last year in playoffs, he is a ball hog. Yes he averaged GREAT numbers in Toronto, BUT that was with bosh injured and their only real other option being freakin Villenuava. He got 42 minutes a game! In the NBA ALOT of players could put up amazing numbers playing 42 minutes a game and getting to touch the ball every time down the court. Also James is putting up these numbers because of a freakin CONTRACT YEAR!!!! Every year there is a player that emerges like this in a contract year gets a FAT CONTRACT and straight up SUCKS next year. (i know this is no baseball but lets use Carlos Beltran as a prime example of this).

Finally IF TMac is healthy and Yao is healthy why would we want a shoot first PG in James when we could have a pass first in Alston. Alston could have very easily averaged 30 minutes, 10 pts, 12-15 assists a game if he had a real team behind him. I mean just look at the fact he averaged 8 assists a game with a team consitent of Yao (who was triple teamed everytime down the court), bowen, Jho, Head. That should impress people in itself.

You guys need to stop looking at numbers and watch the games. Alston is a very solid PG who is able to get the ball into Yao, which James was unable/unwilling to do last year in playoffs (James also unwilling to pass to TMac).

For all I care good riddence Mike James!

Nevermind the poor evalutation and logic. There's no need to drag this tirelessly argued Alston vs. MJ argument into this thread. There about 3,000 other threads out there for that purpose.

I disagree...I actualy think that u r the one looking at numbers.. Alston is nothing... he is simply not the right player for this team.. he might be successful in other teams with running style or something .. but not the rockets.. how many times did u see him run the floor by himself without nobody runing with him ?? the dude is good, but he doesn't fit in this team.. we are a half court team, I know we are boring, but that's what u have when u have a dominant center that doesn't have good mobility (I like to call them stationary, like Shaq and Yao.. while other centers have mobility, like Hakeem and Amare, but the two types are successful and are proven to win championships)... James wasn't no ballhog.. the dude played well for us.. he developed a great chemistry with the team and everybody liked him... we need a PG who can shoot with some handles (good enough to bring it up the court without turnovers), just like James.. the dude just gave the ball to T-mac or Yao and stood behind the 3 point line... waiting for a shot to knock it down ... doesn't that remind u of Hakeem's old Rockets. ?? that's what they did.. they gave the ball to the man and waited for open 3 or the went to the basket and recieved a good pass from the Dream... that's what we need to be successful.. a PG that can shoot.. kinda like Jason Terry..

I'm sure the rockets will make a big move through a trade..Alexander is not one to sit bakc and keep this team the way it is..he has always went for the big name....I don't know who or waht but I think it will be for a PF and/or a 3 point specialist....

Can you imagine the impact of adding Roy or Carney (starting 2) with our first and then Pittsnoggle (4 with range) with our second? Maybe V-Span (2nd/3rd PG) comes over too...

Teamed with a healthly T-Mac and Yao, wow!

And get absolutely nothing as far as on-court production while paying him over $6 million?!?!? Dude, no more for you, you're stoned.

JH was our best PF last year without doubt or question. He is extremely serviceable and blows away the PF we had during the second championship run. With a healthy TMac and Yao, JH is a perfect complimentary player.

Well I see your arguement even though it is floored! If you examine the games you will find that the fact is that Alston rarely pasees to Yao Ming when in scoring position. His dribblemania is almost as bad as Steve Francis!
Alston should be a back up if we get a true Playmaker Point Guard.

Why doesn't anyone see the logic of getting a Power forward who can rebound and play defense?

LOL of course he was our best PF last year because we had clarence weatherspoon be serious! It was juwan, bowen or weatherspoon. The problem is that Juanw cant hold(not even contain) the Pf we will have to play against in the playoffs Dirk, Duncan, L. Odem, Gasol, E. Brand nobody! If we palyed a western conference team their PF would be setting carrer highs on Juwan. Plus Juwan makes more than Ron Artest so I feel we should be getting a little more than a jump shot

I consider that Yao Ming and Shack[In his prime] are decent court runners for their size. 7'6" and 7'2'' versus 6'10" for Hakeem and Amare.

Please don't mention the names of Hakeem and Amare in the same sentence. Hakeem was ten times the defensive player that Amare is.

I do. I don't know why JVG would be looking for that again. Sure, we need shooters. But, getting a perimeter PF leaves Yao all alone under the basket. We need someone who can help carry the burden of rebounding and defending. Let the guards do the shooting.

Not neccessarily. Rasheed Wallace is a good perimeter power forward that takes a lot of outside shots...perticularly from the arc but plays very strong defense and would complement Yao Mings low post game very well.

Dirk Nowitzki is another example of a power forward that loves the outside shot and still manages to grab almost double digit rebounds.

Kevin Garnett much prefers the mid range jump shot in the half court game then playing inside. He blocks a lot of shots and is a rebounding machine.

I'm not saying that JVG is going to get players of their caliber but certainly there are others in the league that play the same role but to a lesser extent.

I think JHo fits the mold but is a bit long in the tooth. When the Rockets had a lot of pure shooting guards last year JHo was a great compliment to Yao I thought.

Troy Murphy is another guy that would be a very good compliment to Yao Ming. He rebounds very well and is a good outside shooter that has been a decent 3 point shooter the last couple of years.

Couldn't agree more. When Yao is all alone defending in the paint, that's about the time he picks up his 4th foul in the first half.

I see no problems with Van Gundy valuing shooting more than rebounding. The team is severely lacking in talent and the “Charlie Hustle” types who play hard, get rebounds, and play defense tend not to be all that talented. We play ugly enough already, the last thing we need is to add another Ryan Bowen or Chuck Hayes type of power forward who can’t shoot worth a lick.

The Yao that played the second half of this past season needs a 4 that can make an open jumper a hell of a lot more than he needs someone to protect him. He seems perfectly capable of protecting himself and his teammates.
