More backups means less time for Yao.

Mutombo will be getting Robert Horry minutes. Basically, that means we're keeping Butler to fill up all the season-long back-up C minutes that Scola is just physically unable to take up due to matchup concerns, and when the second half of the season rolls around we'll slowly phase him into games to the point where he can give us 10-15 minutes of quality basketball a night.

I think when he's healthy and fresh, he really is still the second-best backup C in the game.

Less time for Yao means fewer injuries and a fresher Yao in the Championship game.

Coach A needs to give Butler a chance to show what he can do and can't do by giving him some decent playing time in a real game, even it is only preseason. Now that we have moved away from the JVG style of game Mutombo might also be considered as expendable! If speed is the names of the game then possibly Harris and Reed might become more significant as back ups?

    SOLID:-
    Alston Francis
    James Bonzi
    McGrady Battier
    Scola Chuck
    Yao Ming

    STRONG POSSIBILITY
    Brooks, Head

    BEING CONSIDERED
Mutombo, Butler,Harris, Reed, Novac, Landry and Snyder

    OUT OF THE DOOR:-
    Sura and Lucas :p

I wish this was just a game, so I could trade Harris, Reed, Novac, Landry and Snyder, for picks =/

Mutombo will come in handy when we're playing a guy like Shaq or Dwight Howard. It's all about the matchups.

Deke is the man and "The Vet." Not to bash Butler, but Deke brings more to the table(in short burst). Anyone behind Yao will not get many minutes and defiantly wont be brought in for scoring, as we have plenty of scorers on this team. Deke is a blocking machine and knows how to play the game. It is unfortunate for Butler that he is in this situation, but the Rockets want to win now, not two years from now. It's the same for players like Harris, Landry,Novack, Lucas and others. They just seem to be the odd man out in a deep roster.

I always assumed that Butler would make the team. But from Adelman's comment, it seems that he is still one of the bubble guys. That's too bad. We do need a good young backup center after Mutombo is gone next year.

But it is clear for now that Scola will be the primary backup C when everybody is healthy, unless the opponent has a big center we need to deal with.
