I played D1 and I don't think he should be anymore than a situational player. I appreciate he beat the odds and made it, but lets be real here. If I told u I know a 6'5 pf that is a good rebounder and defender, can't make wide open layups and a terrible ft shooter, what would u say? I mean bo outlaw and reggie evans do the same and are taller and better atheletes.

Zboy, it's usually quite rare that I am in complete agreement with everything you say. This is one of those times.

Outlaw and evans are nowhere near as smart as chuck is. what seperates them from chuck is they rely on there hustle and agility. outlaw was a mostly a energy player. his defense was'nt all that great. he was'nt great at thinking his way through defensive sets. and evans is mostly a rebounder then a defensive stud.

Chuck relies on hustle and basketball brain. i agree that chuck is a situational player. but that dosent lessen the fact that is is our smartest defensive player who tends to come up with big defensive plays if needed. chucks a elite defensive player. he is a top PF interms of defensive effec goes.

I think Chuck Hayes is an incredibly smart basketball player, who is also one of the best one on one defenders the Rockets have ever had.

However, his lack of any type of offensive game and terrible FT shooting limit him to being a specialist.....a defensive specialist.

ronnymac- I'm not sure if its the homer in u or what, but outlaw played 13 seasons or so becuz he played very, very hard, he hustled, he was long and smart. Go ask Francis and other how good a defender outlaw was. He could full court press a pg and make him give the ball up. Evans is a clone of outlaw. Hayes isn't any smarter than those guys plus he can't even make wide open layups.

Also, I think his offense is underestimated too. He's a really good passer and very efficient. Sure, he's not offense player, but his offense is good enough to make him a starter in 2 years.

When people keep saying, "He can't make wide open layups" ... what do they really mean?

Chuck is a career 55% shooter from the field (only 12 players have had a higher FG% over the last 3 seasons, when playing at least 3500 minutes). On one hand, I hear that all Chuck can do is make wide open layups. Then, the same people say that he can't make wide open layups. It's all very confusing to me.

The only shot he takes are wide open layups and he makes 55 percent of them while missing the other 45 percent.

Got it. So what leegibez and others actually means is he can not make wide open layups consistently.

But when he suggests that Reggie Evans ... a career 47% shooter, can make the point blank shots consistently, how do we explain the discrepancy in the shooting percentage? I don't recall Reggie Evans trying to create a number of shots for himself. Offensively, he has basically the same role as Chuck, but he's somewhat more athletic. It would seem that he should shoot at least as high a percentage as Chuck, and probably more so. And yet, according to his hotspots chart at NBA.com, he shoots a mere 47% on shots close to the basket, while Chuck shot 55%.

I'll also say that I consider it a gross simplification to say that Chuck exclusively attempts "wide open layups". I have half a mind to track this in detail for the upcoming season, just to dispel that myth once and for all.
