He wouldn't be eligible for San Antonio's playoff roster if he did that. And San Antonio would go over the luxury tax if they re-signed him.
Actually... San Antonio can do that... they didn't use their MLE this season.. keeping them under the limit. And anyone who was signed after the trade deadline is eligible for the playoff roster. So they can do it... and probably will. But its nice to hope.
Can Brent Barry still dunk from the FT line? If we land him, Houston will have the 1996 and 2007 slam dunk champions.
Only if they are released after March 1. Provided BB is released before 3/1, any team can sign him and have him on playoff roster including the spurs. When a player is signed doesn't matter as far as I can tell.
MLE doesn't protect a team from the luxury tax, but they could technically sign a player with MLE, pay luxury tax, and lose all the money they would get that is collected from luxury taxed teams. I'm not sure, but I think I heard that the Spurs wouldn't use MLE due to luxury tax issues and that the Spurs were really close to the line. With all the talk the past two days, I can't be sure that the Spurs trades may or may not have affected their proximity to luxury tax.
Nuggets after him as well http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/feb/22/melo-not-upset-nuggets-passed-on-artest/
