"We are offering the maximum allowed on a two-year contract," said Daryl Morey, Rockets General Manager. "We are in full pursuit." And not just in the figurative sense. The Rockets are literally going after Barry. "Coach (Rick) Adelman and I plan to go to San Antonio and meet with Brent," Morey said. "We want to give him the full treatment." Barry's father, Rick, played for the Rockets during the 1978-1979 season and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His brother, Jon, played for the Rockets for two years and is currently an NBA television analyst. Brent Barry is a 13-year veteran. Including this season Barry played for the San Antonio Spurs for four years, helping them to two NBA titles. He was traded to Seattle Wednesday in the deal that sent Kurt Thomas to the Spurs. He was included to make the deal work financially and was released 48 hours later. The Spurs would like to re-sign him. The Phoenix Suns, L.A. Lakers, and Boston Celtics have also expressed interest. "We think Brent can be a key piece in our playoff run if we can get him," Morey said. "We think he can help us in a significant way." The first day Barry can sign with any team is Tuesday.
Man, let's hope so. I don't see anyone else offering a two year contract. I figured Morey had something up his sleeve and I was wondering if we could offer him a second year. I'm glad Morey is trying anyway possible to get him. Come on Brent I have been wanting you on the Rockets for years. Sign!
I'm not sure, but I know the second year is a player option. I think the Rockets can offer about 1.1 million, but there are thousands on this board who should correct me on that one. I'm only an author and teacher...and I still can't do the math. Cod
For those of you mentioning the family connection, I hear Rick Barry on the Bay Area radio waves from time to time. He has said several times he thought the Rockets underpaid Jon to a "criminal" degree. Rick is kind of a wacko, but anyway, I don't know that Rick or Jon will (1) have any sway, or (2) vote for Houston in any event. It's a different franchise than when Jon was here even. Fingers crossed. Brent would be really good for the Adelman system I think. Underrated passer added to our 32-assist team!
That was quick! I wonder if they'll offer him a Rockets jersey as a take home gift like they did Rashard
Wouldn't that just frost the Spurs cookie. We basically stole Scola from them and then if we picked up Barry and he helped us beat them in the WCF. Lord, they would be bitter! Let's hope it happens.
That would be so awesome if it happens. We'd get a 3 point threat who would spread the floor out for Yao and has long arms to defend well too.
i'm really crossing my fingers on this one. all barry's have high bball iq and can really shoot the ball. brent used to be way more athletic than his brother. his signing will make our roster complete. right now, we're a bit short on the back up 2 position. but why the spurs will include barry in the thomas trade but not anyone else, knowing he'd be waived right off the bat? does that say they had some sort of pre-arrangement with barry, knowing he'd re-sign? i mean they clearly want him back. otoh, morey and adelman are no fools. if they indeed had a pre-arrangement, they would not have decided to actually go to san antonio to meet with barry and try to sway him, no? and what exactly does "the max allowed for a 2-year deal" mean?
