chillout? Brent Barry would be a nice pickup for sure, but his D is horrible and his calf is majorly jacked... he's injured it twice this year, and I'm thinking it won't take much to re-injure it. I'd rather have someone else, Brent Barry is too one dimensional to be effective for us (we have Novak who can jack 3's all day).
posted by hooroo: [rquoter]Rockets are outsiders because they are least proven of the playoff teams. IMO his family in SA could be the decider but you never know... http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/...rs.3898d93.html[/rquoter]
Please, do not compare Novak to Brent Barry. Barry is one of the most savvy basketball players around. He's a superb passer, a very good ball-handler, and despite losing a step on defense he's still a smart defender. He could probably play 3 positions for us as well (PG, SG, SF). The injury is a concern, no question, but a healthy Brent Barry would be perfect for us.
We can offer him more $$ than the Spurs. If he accepts less $$ and goes to the Spurs, then we can do a Popovich trick and ask Stern to investigate whether there is a under table deal.
No, we can't - the Spurs have their whole MLE to offer. We can only have the minimum veteran exception, 1.2million IIRC.
Yep....we can't offer him more than the Spurs. Spurs have their full MLE, and the Rockets only have their 1.2M MVE.
Yes if novak was compareable to brent barry there would be more threads on "Novak on the Bench WTF" but there isn't any...Barry would be sweet to have i think he's got what we need (poise, shooting, and shooting) Jon Barry brought the game to life and was a crafty guy better passer and also more dangerous on the T/O stat as well haha but i liked him
I thought the Spurs were closer to the luxury tax than the Rockets. The luxury tax is a pretty hard salary cap for most teams and this includes both the rockets and the spurs.
Not sure about this. But the LEAST the Spurs could offer is 1.2 million - they can't offer less than that. So the notion that we can offer more money is false. If they don't want to dip into their MLE, they can still sign him for just as much as we can - therefore making it more of a team choice than money.
I give this a less than 2% chance of happening. If we had significant playing time to offer him, maybe. But as is, Im sure he has already decided to head back to The Alamo City.
Could the Rockets simply claim him off waivers and take his contract? I don't know his contract details, but if I'm right, he wasn't bought out, merely waived.
We do have significant playing time to offer him. It's called Luther Head's backup SG spot. Brent isn't like Jon; he's a better player than Head in almost every facet of their games. I do think we'd be below the priority list for him behind Phoenix and SA tho. I'm hoping Stern underhandedly forbids SA from re-acquiring him.
If we do it we would have 2 Slam Dunk Champions on our team. so that would be that give us the title.
I don't see why he wouldn't go back to SA. They have the most money for him, it's the team he just left, he family is probably already there - plus, he needs 3 more weeks to heal up, which is about 30 days from now. If he doesn't sign with SA, it's because they DON"T want him back.
Barry would be a solid pickup if management can sign him. He's an excellent three point shooter and he can handle the ball and pass well. The Rockets can play big with him at the point and not lose anything.
