He is a back seat type of Hayes.

Did you watch NBA basketball before 2003?

Juwan Howard is CURRENTLY a journeyman, but in his Bullets and Nuggets days, he was a very good player. A way OVERPAID player, but a good one nonetheless.

This is why I coined the phrase "The Juwan Howard Effect" to describe how a good player can sign an exhorbitant contract and then be viewed as a terrible player for the rest of his career since he could never live up to his salary. (I'm sure others have used this phrase, but I independently came up with it. ;) ).

I don't think he needs to bulk up at all, he has already developed an NBA body. Haven’t you noticed he sometimes walks like The Thing from Fantastic Four? sort of like a penguin, though just to make sure how strong he is I’d like to see some big guy try to back him down.

hayes is a veteran. comparing ppat to him is not really helpful.

ppat is 6'9, a little bit shorter than jhill. if what ar said about ppat's team defense is really what ra believe, ppat is better than jhill. you have to have a very good team defence concept, court vision, and bball iq to be a good team defender.

on the other side, scola is our starting pf. jhill will have no place to play after rox gets a real center. jhill has been showing inconsistent efforts. i am not sure what contributed his inconsistent play. it seems to me his bball iq is not very high. he looks to me more or less another version of stromile swift. on one play of yesterday game, he defended aldridge very well to cause missing a shot but let aldridge grab an offense reboud to put it back in. i saw him turn around right after aldridge released the ball and just watched the ball hitting the rim and didn't do anything. he should either box out aldridge or go to grab the reboud.

if we have to give up one of two in a trade. i prefer to keep ppat.

I'd hold off on calling him a Chuck Hayes equivalent defensively. He has the will. He tries and shows good fundamentals but I'm not sure he has the defensive TALENT yet. I'd have to see him a bit more. If he can show that he has those quick hands to get strips and good anticipation then I'll be on board. Not that I don't already think he has skills and potential to be something special.

Just when we thought our team couldn't get any deeper!

    PG- Lowry/Brooks/Smith
    SG- Martin/Buddinger/Lee
    SF- Battier/T. Williams
    PF- Scola/PPat
    C-Miller/Hill

With the talent we have, there has to be some sort of star for the taking. I'm looking forward to

I think that Patterson has a lot of potential! The past two games he has gotten 20 rebounds in about 42 minutes! I'm not saying that he is a Kevin Love, but he is no slouch either. I envision him being a Dale Davis type of player. He will have a knack for rebounding and defend, but will be limited in the offensive apartment.

He's mostly, if not all, arms....he'll probably need to buk up his base, like chuck did, to really defend all the 4s out there.

I wonder if this means the end of the chuck wagon is near, at least in houston.

not surprising i mentioned in one of the summer league recaps that Patrick was always keeping his head moving and always talking on defense and i think i said something like he will be a good rebounder based on his technique.

his man defense still needed work back then but he was a far better help defender even in the summer and covered up a lot of Hill's mistakes then in those games.

if patterson can be like Carl Landry with better defense we have a nice solid player on our hands here

As long as he'll re-sign for a similar salary (~$2M per year), the Rockets DEFINITELY have Chuck Hayes in their plans. They want him to be a situational defender, more of a 9th or 10th man. Ideally, they'd like Scola and Patterson to play most of the minutes at PF but for Hayes to come in against elite offensive players to slow them down for stretches when they get hot.

I couldn't agree more with that strategy.

Does Patters have Chuck's passing ability, though?

Interesting... I thought the "Juwan Howard Effect" was causing an onslaught of injuries where ever you go.

Yeah that makes sense, but i wonder if anyone would give him more? I think another team may push the price on us, he's much more popular nowadays.

That was supposed to be Scola's rebound, but he was for some reason by the freethrow line.

Everyone is just using Hill as an escape goat for last nights loss, but really the team sucked as a whole...

Look i'm not trying to give Hill any excuse, but there's a difference in guarding LaMarcus Aldridge and Donte Cunningham..

He needs to have a consistent go to move in the post. I think he has a pretty good midrange jump shot, judging from his highlights from Kentucky.

If he can develop a good post up move, he can average a good 16 points 10 rebounds a game along with the toughness we've needed for a long time

And no, I don't think PP is a Hayes + Landry, although we can all hope. Every "era" we have a couple players we'd like to merge into one player (Cato+MoT, Scola+Landry, Scola+Hayes), but if we had that player, they'd be a perennial all-star. PP will be a serviceable player who looks great because we see glimpses of a 2 way player at the 4, something we haven't seen for a long time.

I can tell you from seeing him in person that he doesn't look that big, but neither did Hakeem and Hakeem was stronger than Shaq. What is impressive physically, is how quickly he gets to the top of his jump and how high that is. This guy will have no problem rebounding around 7 footers.

I was at the Toronto game and one thing I noticed about Pat is that he is HUGE. I'm not sure if the listing of 235 is his current weight. He also looked very impressive in the paint, and was scrappy as hell. I think the first play he was in he dove to the ground to get a ball. Definitely think he should be our backup pf and start getting him ready to be a damn good starter in the future.
