Nelson will not be the coach of the Rockets next year. It's just another Nellie ploy like hack-a-Bruce (my favorite so far). Cuban would rather die than have the architect of his team go to another Western Conference team, and a team in Texas at that. Book it.
Does he know how to coach a big man? Hes never had one. Hes turned Raef Lefrenz into crap forever. Whats his offensive stragedy for a big man? Dirk is only a perimter player, Raef is only a perimter player. Ya he turned dirk into a star but he can shoot. We know eddie cant shoot outside so what can nelly do for him based on history? . His best defensive stragedy that he can think of for a conference finals is a hack-a-bowen. Do we really want this guy? If he can bring in some defensive minded assistants. That maybe...but Larry brown is ten times the coach that don nelson is imo
i will never forgive him for breaking up the core in golden state. Webber, Mullin, Spree, Timmy....ah.....that was a fun ride...
now this is a hard choice. choosing between Nelson, Brown, Van Gundy, Dunleavy.. all of them have very good experiences under their belts. everyone of them has an outstanding resume. now, im really confused who to pick imo for the new rocs head coach.
Nelson? The guy has never won a championship, all he does is runs gimmicks. While they are cute, and do work often, they have never worked well in the playoffs. You want Nelson? Ask Knicks fans about that idea. Honestly alot of the Mavericks success is because of Nelson Jr, who is a stud scout, especially in European circles.
I hope we don't get Nelson. I don't think he is really interested in coaching down here either. I just don't know. I think Brown is the best guy for our team right now.
Nelson to Houston? 'Absolutely ridiculous' 05/28/2003 By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News Mavericks coach Don Nelson vigorously denied having any contact with the Houston Rockets about their vacant coaching position, contrary to reports in Houston. Nelson is in the final year of his coaching contract with the Mavericks. He has three years remaining as general manager and five more years left as a consultant. "I haven't heard anything about it," Nelson said. "It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm under contract. That's the end of the story." Reports from Houston said Nelson had shown interest in the Rockets job, which opened when Rudy Tomjanovich resigned on Friday. Nelson on Friday talked to Rockets vice president Carroll Dawson, "but only to wish Rudy the best," Nelson said. Nelson also left tickets for Sunday's Game 4 at American Airlines Center for Dawson and Rockets owner Leslie Alexander. "They came up here but were interested in interviewing Mike Dunleavy," Nelson said. "That's all I know." Former Philadelphia coach Larry Brown, Dunleavy and former New York coach Jeff Van Gundy are believed to be front-runners for the Houston position. Since he is under contract with the Mavericks, Nelson cannot have any contact with other teams regarding a coaching position without owner Mark Cuban's approval. Nelson on Friday jokingly said that Houston rookie Yao Ming "considers me his American father." Nelson and his son, Donnie, have known Yao since he was a junior player in China.
Pop didnt appriciate the Hack-a- Bowen idea either..Heres Popovich afrer that game, about Nelson... " This guy is unbelievable. He trys to muddle you. Its all so he can have a laugh and a beer after the game".
I used to be a Don Nelson naysayer. However, having watched the Mavs grow & mature over the past several years, I have concluded that NELLIE IS A COACHING GENIUS! He makes the team > sum of the parts - the antiRudy. I would LOVE Nellie as a coach, but I don't think Mark Cuban is stupid enough to let him walk. D R
Well if this sports guy from Philly is right......then if Larry Brown goes to Clippers, Cavs, or Nuggets, I'd be glad to have Don Nelson and all of his assistants and staff members in Houston. If not him.......then Pat Riley. If not Pat Riley...then Jeff Van Gundy. If not Jeff Van Gundy.....then Mike Dunleavy, Doc Rivers, or Paul Silas. If not them.......then bring back Rudy.
I think all of the Nellie talk was started by Randy Gallaway during a drunkin stuper during a slow day at the horse track. I don't think for a second that there is anything to it. Nellie was very close to calling it a career and moving back to Maui a few short years ago.
To be honest with you, I don't know HOW we can be dissapointed with the coach we get. What we know is that everyone wants this job. Everyone wants the next team that will make the Finals. What's happening? I'll tel you. Larry Brown, Jeff Van Gundy, and Don Nelson watched their teams and said to themselves: "You know what we're missing? An inside presence that's effectiveness is not fazed by today's zones. Someone who can hit the outside shot, and also dominate the post. Someone who can anchor our defense by just being present. But also, someone who will listen to my every word. Someone who will always be in shape, and is committed to the team." Then they look over at the Rockets and realize that we are the only team in the NBA that has what they lacked. They realized that you can have everything and not Yao Ming, and you wouldn't win. But if you have Yao Ming and Steve Francis, then you can surround them with your players and win. I'm not at all worried abotu who our coach will be, because our 4th option is probably the 4th best coach in the league.
Stay away from Don Nelson and his son. Don Nelson has to be the worst defensive coach in the NBA, and you're not going to run and gun your way to an NBA championship.
Well of course Nellie would deny any interest. I still believe Larry Brown would want another 5 or 6 years with a team that can win it all, and that's our team. He could go to the Clips or the Nugs but why? I say he coaches the Rockets, then, as he's getting closer to 70, he retires and lives Rocky Mountain High.
Why would Nelson want to coach the Rockets? Comparing the Houston job to the Mavs job, I wouldn't even consider moving. In Dallas, he's GM, has the respect of the city and the owner (and owner committed to winning), is well paid, works with his son, and has a 60-win WC finalist that will compete for a championship for years to come. The only real drawback is he has to live in Dallas. I don't see any reason why he'd give that up to come to Houston. Also, if we did hire Nelson, folks, we wouldn't get his team of 12 assistant coaches. That's something Cuban wanted to do; I don't see any other employer doing it.
