I bet if this happened to OKC last year, but Westbrook got his triple double in the final 3 minutes, he'd vote against protesting, despite the chance to win with a redo.
The refs didn’t beat us.....really we’re complaining because some no named scrub stayed in a game we should have been up by 20+ points in!!!! We got beat plain and simple by the same old issue, they played defense on is in the second half and not enough height and muscle to stop their big man from getting 20 rebounds. We had to drop back all our small players to help rebound and Lou Will and Rivers went off with open threes.
Yeah but said scrub played a huge role in the last few minutes and completely swung the game in LAC's favor off of two bad offensive foul calls.
No doubt the reffing sucked, but the Rockets got beat by Deandre hitting free throws (not a fan of giving away free points to cruddy teams) and the aforementioned players hitting open shots. As Morey once said “good teams don’t win close games, good teams aren’t in close games.”
If the NBA makes this defense against the protest, then they are just avoiding their blatant mistake, and saying such mistakes can't harm the outcome of 3pt game. The argument can't even be about who was supposed to Foul Out (like, star vs role player). It's just a pretty huge mistake to allow an illegal-man to play. You appear to want to deny the protest as punishment to the Rockets, whereas some want to uphold the protest as a message to the league, by embarrassing them. Nothing like a blatant error and embarrassing consequences to achieve something beyond the actual judgement (in this case, a single-game redo). Is your disgust for the Rockets execution in losing the lead actually your argument against the relevance of any protests.
I don't see this protest working at all. The refs screwed up in giving the foul to the wrong person. In essence, it was a judgement call (albeit bad judgement) and judgement calls are not a misapplication of the rules.
This is the same thing Feigen said in one of his earlier tweets. Makes no sense to me. The foul call is a judgement call. Once that is made, blatantly assigning the foul to the wrong person is more like a clerical, technical error. I mean, imagine in soccer Yellow Carding someone (resulting in their 2nd and ejection), then some long discussion happens, and in the meantime, the refs forgot who they yellow carded, and they give it to another, who hasn't received one, yet. The yellow card was a judgement call, but assigning it to the wrong person was a technical error...(ie, misapplication of the rules). The very same protest worked for Pat Riley in 2007 -- the only other time the ending of a game was redone.
The Pat Riley protest was due to the fact that they falsely had Shaq with 6 fouls when he only had 5 and removed him from the game. That's a totally different situation. Not only that, it wasn't a referee screw up, it was an official scorer screw up. It is not uncommon for the wrong player to be given a foul. It's just exacerbated in this situation because it happened near the end of the game and should have been the 6th.
The end game here isn’t that the Rockets should get to replay the game. But since the official scorers and refs BOTH were in error, the protest is more than justified. They didn’t simply miss a jugment call; they allowed a player to contribute to a victory that had been disqualified. Assigning a foul to the wrong player (and falling for this deception by the Clippers’ players) is a fairly big mistake. In the bigger scheme, this entire crew should lose points with the league, reducimg their chances of callng games in the post season. Doesn’t the NBA grade its officiatimg crews? I’d be happy if this group that called all these fouls wrong and showed some bias and partiality got negative marks for their inability to control the game.
Not saying it isn't.....just saying that I doubt this protest will be upheld because the referees called the foul on the wrong player.
How is the official scorer at fault? The referee said foul on Williams. The official scorer marked the foul for Williams as per the referee's erroneous designation. And more than likely, the officiating crew will be dinged. They get reviewed throughout the season.
but its not uncommon for an offcial scorer to screw up as well what explanation/justification can the all the 3 refs give for calling the foul on Lou? they thought Evans was Lou? or they actually saw Lou foul Harden? or they did it in purpose fully knowing the opposite? gamblng/pointshaving? are they even fit/qualified/competent/credible to still referee an NBA game? for me the replay is not that important as the investigation to see where the breakdown/s was. so the nba & refs will think twice before blatantly cheating any other nba team again.
Nothing good is going to come out of this. So I just see it as us coming out looking as whiners. The refs f'ed up; happens all the time; it was a mistake, this isn't going to alter the way the game will be refereed. It will make us look like complainers. Can only imagine how pathetic we'll look if we do get a replay and lose that one too *shrug*. It will just have people criticize the league more; and the league will have us to thank for that. It will just have the refs see us as the ones calling them out...People would say the refs hated the Chris Paul Clippers because they whined so much. All for the hopes we get an extra win that may or may not matter at the end. One regular season game should never matter for a championship team. That's what we're playing for. If it happens to work out that we needed that win for home court, just tell yourself the win over Philly Harden fouled Embiid with an illegal pick to give EG the space for the game winner and forget it.
Sure official scorers can screw up (evidence, the Miami protest), but in this case the scorer was following the referee's direction. Do you really think this was some sort of grand conspiracy or cheating? Do you really think the refs decided "let's keep Evans in the game. He is critical to the outcome of this game". EDIT Do you really think they will risk their careers and jail time for Juwan Evans?
This is the problem. "The refs f'ed up; happens all the time" When refs have no accountability and nobody cares about their mistakes, then nothing changes or improves.
