how about JL3, sura's contract, a Whataburger coupon, and some rusty belt buckles for Haslem? I think morey can get it done
Good point. Butler has potential but he hasn't shown it over the course of an entire season as a regular contributor. He can start by getting in shape. You made another good argument for Foster. I am with you.
I heard about this, too. His contract is pretty rich, similar to that of Haslem. However, despite his age, I see more value for Houston in Abdur-Rahim as a backup than Haslem. Shareef has adjusted to a reserve role at this point in his career and would fit better into Adelman's system. Shareef is a bonafide scorer inside the paint and has shooting range. He is a high percentage shooter and a tough-nosed offensive player when healthy. I definitely like this idea.
Haslem would definitely have been a better option than Howard, even with an additional year on his contract. I imagine McHale was not aware that Haslem would be available and, to be honest, we aren't even sure that he is. Until a deal is made, or some official word is out, it is all just hyperbole.
Marcus Camby is making $8,000,000 next season and the season after that, then slightly less than $8 million in the final year.
Abdur-Rahim is a much better scorer than Howard and a much better rebounder than Howard, especially on the offensive end.
No, Shareef is too slow to play SF. He plays PF and even played some center early last season while Miller was dealing with the plantar fascitis.
He doesn't drill the mid-range jumper as many people seem to think. He improved that area of his game a couple of years ago and become decent but he is not, by any means, an gifted jump shooter. He returned to struggling with his jump shooting last season. His high percentages come mostly from Chuck Hayes-type baskets. Also, while Haslem may have been a good fit next to Yao in a JVG system, he would not be as effective in Adelman's system. The Heat don't play an up-tempo style of game. They are closer to the recent Rockets than any of the running teams. Haslem would not fit into Adelman's system as well as Scola and Abdur-Rahim.
Thats my point. Reef makes no sense here. with the heat signing Smush Parker, it probaly ends this bogus rummor anyway.
Smush Parker really isn't the answer to their problems. They still need a distributor, and believe me, from watching a lot of Lakers games in the past... Smush is no pg.
The rumor in ESPN insider is Rafer to Miami, Posey to Sactown, and Abdur-Raheem to Houston. I don't know how long his contract is but that sounds like a pretty realistic scenario to me. Except for the grumblings I've read around here that Adleman didn't like Reef in his offensive scheme. Either way that does wonders for our depth because reef can play both forward postions. Yao/Butler/Deke? Scola/Hayes/Reef/Landry Battier/Reef/Novak T-mac/Bonzi/Head/Francis Francis/James/Brooks Our ability to mix and match 1-4 will be unreal, in any given situation. Anyway just a bullplop rumor but I'd be happy with it.
Abdur-Rahim's contract is for 3 years. The Posey to the Kings,Skip to the Heat, and SAR to Houston was proposed by that pathetic Hoopsworld site some days ago as well.
Whatever. Ask any coach in the NBA, including Adelman, on which player they want in their "system", and all of them would choose Haslem over SAR and Scola. I never said he was a "gifted" jump shooter, but neither is SAR (who is over the hill) nor Scola (who hasn't played a single NBA game and has a huge adjustment ahead of him). Most of us here have seen Haslem enough to know what he can do.
SAR sucks. Morey cannot be stupid enough to get baited into this by riley. Id much rather trade rafer for expiring contracts than this.
Foster and Thomas are back-up centers. Hayes is a better power forward than either, as is hopefully Scola. Instead of trading for one of these two I'd rather just sign Deke for back-up C while we also see if there is any hope for Butler to take over down the line. Deke is a great back-up for the 12-15 minutes you need behind Yao. SAR I guess I would take for Alston (with Reed or Snyder thrown in, or in September, Butler). I'd probably want an extra 2nd rounder. There really isn't that much difference in the amount of money owed to Alston vs SAR over the next 3 years. Factor in Reed or Snyder or Butler and the total $ is really close. So SAR would be OK, but Haslem would be a strong preference (Hayes/Alston S&T). I also would take Donyell Marshall over SAR (not as versitile an offensive player but 1 year less contract, relatively better rebounding/defense, and has 3 range). Basically SAR or DM just provide a 3rd alternative to Hayes and Scola, and bridge until Scola (hopefully) proves ready to be an NBA workhorse with Hayes as his back-up.
Here's what I think Morey might be seeking someone who can play both C and PF: 1. Deke may retire. 2. Deke may sign with another team. 3. Deke may be ineffective due to age. 4. If Yao goes down again, do you trust relying on Butler (or Butler and Deke) to play 48 minutes a game? Morey might trust his current guys, and getting someone paid at the MLE level (like Foster) may be overkill, but as we can see from the PG situation, Morey seems to rather be over-prepared than under-prepared. Let's remember, given that Deke and Chuck are both free agents, the only proven reliable NBA interior player on the roster right now is Yao Ming.
