Didnt catch everything. One of the more sloppy recaps but hope it will do for now. My apologies.
    _________________________________________________
Tough day. Appreciate all the hard work they did and put forth. Tough day from that standpoint but we'll move forward. Got serious things to fix on D.

What about your situation? Your reaction?

Tough day to be honest. Positive thing for me. Exciting. Appreciate Bob's confidence in me. I wanted to enjoy coaching the team last week and finish the season the right way. Visited today and decided on a new direction. Thankful for that but know I got work to do.

    Position coaches you let go?

Our D was not good. Got some serious problems we gotta address. Wasnt all coaching. Issues across the board. Have to make a decision of how to get better. I made that decision to let those 4 guys go(DC Frank Bush and DB coach David Gibbs have been fired. Also, LB coach Johnny Holland and asst. LB coach Robert Saleh) and retained a coach(Bill Kollar). Combo of everything. We'll bring in a new coordinator and gotta be fair to him and putting a staff together.

Do you think last 4 years, how do you factor in d

Whatever we done in FA or draft, not good enough D.

    Speculation about coordinators.

I have talked to no one. My focus was on Jacksonville. I will be talking to people as early as this evening. Need to get started on this to lock in a direction.

    Thoughts on Wade?

I know him. Competed against him. Respect him. We'll talk to a number of people. Wade will be one.

Last time, you said you will interview several?

    I will talk to several.

    Your decision solely?

All apart of that process. Bob got ideas, Rick got ideas, I got ideas. We gotta come up with best group of guys.

    Final say?

    We will all work together.

You want a guy who has been a coordinator?

Yes, very important. As we move forward, want someone well respected. We will do everything to do best guy.

    Matter if 34 guy?

It doesnt. Have to respect the guy we hire. DOesnt matter what we play. We'll have to adapt to them.

    CBA an issue?

Not sure that factors in. Difficulty that could come in play is if something lingers and we dont have our players in the offseason. That can get scary. Lets hope it doesnt. Important we do something fast.

    Mario Williams

Always imagine a few players have a thought one way or the other but he wants to be successful. If we move to 3-4, we gotta convince him thats whats best. Gotta get the best guy. We wont go to 3-4 out of spite.

    Who will play nose?

Cart before the horse. We got some holes. That would have to be addressed.

    Harder to fire people?

Difficult, yes. Brutal day. Part of my job. My job is to do whats best.

    [Missed question]

I'm very lucky. After our process and this year, I work for a great man that believes in me. Fortunate there. I wont let him down. I got a lot of work to do. Tough day but we'll move forward. I got confidence in myself and what Bob wants me to do.

    Relief that your safe?

Not yet. I have to deal with many other tough things. Tough overweighs everything.

[Missed question but regarding potential FAs]

Few guys like that today. Met with everyone today. Open book because of CBA. Bernard convo was good. He's always played hard for us. He is a good player.

    Want him back?

He has done a good job for us but we'll go back to evaluating.

How important to sign OD and Leinart?

All important but so much work to be done before that. OD wants to be here and we want him. Matt, very proud of him. I went through this before with Brian Griese. Matt came here and was about gaining confidence back. He is a fine young man and a team will be getting a good QB if he's not back here.

    How much upside?

Huge. Got the IT factor. Watching him come here, where he was, to where he is now, hell of a QB.

Your new DC, give him personnel control?

No doubt. We need to do everything to support that guy. We got a problem. D was bad. Gotta sell our program to top notch guy. What he doesnt have, we gotta go get it. We need to be committed to getting better.

    Rick's job is safe?

Only talked to Bob about myself. Cant speak for Rick and Bob's convos.

    [Missed question]

Gotta be different. I had 2 opportunites. Gave 2 first time guys opportunites. Proud of their effort. What will be different? Well it gotta be different. It cant take time so we need right guy.

What do you mean gotta be quick?

We wont sit here and wait for everything to pan out of next month. Gotta start tonight. Whoever we get, gotta be successful next year.

    [Missed question]

No doubt in my mind. We thought we were there 6 weeks in. We were not. We need to improve as a team. We know where the problems are.

    [Missed question]

Tough. Obviously my friends I've known for a long time. Greatest feeling giving those guys opportunites but I had to shake their hand and move in another direction. Part of my job.

What happened to Cushing? Different player this year.

Brian missed time and that hurt him. When you miss 4 weeks, you dont bounce back just like that. Suspension hurt him. DeMeco hurt hurt Brian. Combo of things. Effort was the same though. Still made big plays. We needed him to be huge. When you look at whole D, it didnt happen. His effort was same.

    Changes within yourself going forward?

I'll evaluate myself too. I listen to everyone. Thats why Ray and Mike Sherman were here. I dont see this hire being different.

    [Missed question]

I cant speak for Ray. We talked. He has talked about retirement. His contract is up. As of today, Ray is helping with evaluations.

    Mark Anderson

Good convo with him. Bill did good job with him. We'll see.

    [Missed question]

    I really dont know.

How do you address slow starts?

Have to go back and look. Started fast yesterday and in Denver. Just gotta go back and look.

    [Missed question]

    Evaluate that like everything else.

Thoughts on not making changes during season?

Didnt call for that during season. Coaches did their jobs. I didnt see that as the fix.

    [Missed question]

Has a lot to do with...Bill does a hell of a job. He had 4 guys suit up who werent even on our team at beginning.

Bob mentioned extension to help with hiring coaches last year. Issue now?

I hope he gave me an extension because I was a good coach but that is part of the business. That is our job to convince whoever we bring in that we'll do it the right way and win.

So in other words, nothing has changed at all. Kubiak handpicked Richard Smith who got fired, then handpicked Bush who got fired, now he gets to handpick another under the stipulation that there must be an "interview?"

I'm not a fan of the "revolving door" system like they have in Oakland but you look at what guys like Payton, Haley, Smith (ATL) have done in their short time and have to wonder why McNair refuses to make a change.

WHY THE HELL DIDN'T THEY GET THAT LAST YEAR WHEN HE WAS TOLD THIS YEAR WOULD BE A MAKE OR BREAK?????

instead, they COMPLETELY ignored the secondary and brought in no one!

Because it's has become painfully obvious that it wasn't a make it or break it year, the extension should have been clue enough.

If they do nothing of serious consequence this offseason then we should already know this season won't be one either.

Bob McNair showed such flawed logic on Bob Allen's show it was sad.
He is making a huge mistake not going after Cowher.

Better to rebuild the team now than wait until next season to shop for a new head coach. And Wade Phillips should never be considered as a head coach.

Maybe Kubiak will 'become' a good head coach?
But the drafts are bad, the defensive secondary laughable, never could get a decent DT or edge rusher on the line.
We need another starting WR and depth at OL.
    Special teams are sorry.

McNair talked about traumatic as if the fans haven't endured enough.

Enough is enough, he needs help running the organization.

Fully confident that if all it took for the Texans was to get 7-9 to make the playoffs, they'd find a way to go 5-11, or as McNair would call it: "a team on the rise"

This is all coming down to Bob McNair doesn't know what he is doing.
    Sad.

He really needs to get feedback from some objective NFL types on this organization.

Call several for analysis, Cowher, Don Shula, Tony Dungy somebody outside the organization.

Anyone besides Bum Phillips or Dan Reeves (another bad decision)

    Sad.

    While venting...

Never call your friends and ask for advice.

Call your adversaries or find someone outside that isn't afraid to point out your blindspots.

The good ole boy systems sink franchises.

You didnt hear?! His fellow owners told him how 'impressed' they were with all the comebacks they've had, even though they didn't win. His fellow owners also assured him that his franchise is 'on the right track'. Yeah, sad that Bob fell for it.

Yeah, Bob is that kid, who when his friend says he has something on his shirt, Bob looks down, and his friend bops him on the nose and then says "Tricked you! Hehe" or "Made you look!". Bob falls for it.

Richard Smith (as opposed to Rick Smith) was Gary's first hire as DC. He was fired after 2008 (iirc) and replaced by Frank Bush.

Thanks, but disappointing. I was hoping for a "clean house," a do over. I don't think it would take two years for Cowher to turn this ship around.

I thought that was more of a product of
    1. His ridiculous belief in David Carr
    2. Bush refused to sign before the Draft Day
    3. Mario would sign before Draft Day

Speaking of Rick Smith, is the indication thus far that he won't be fired? Or do GM's normally not get fired until after after the draft?

Either way, firing Bush and Smith was the MINIMUM that needed to be done if Kubiak was retained. Of course, leave it to McNair to half ass it when it comes to fixing obvious problems.
