I swear, Gary knows he should've been fired and is just thrilled that Bob doesn't know when enough is enough.

Based on the fact that Kubiak is being allowed to stay for a 6th season and gets to hire his own defensive coordinator again? That's what leads you to believe he has lost power?

Sounds like Gary got the wake up call today and the defense will look VERY different next year.

Is Kubiak really free to hire his own guy? I have to ask since I can't listen to the press conferences at work.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Kubiak calling the Phillips' ranch this past month.

But he acknowledges that whatever happens with the D need to happen quickly. They can't hire a first time DC and give him time to find his feet. Likewise, if the leash just got shorter (damn, that's a long leash), then I think moving to 3-4 might be too radical an option.

The reports that have come out are that Wade Phillips was never contacted by anyone from the Texans.

Also, the Chronicle reported that McNair is letting Kubiak pick his defensive coordinator. The stipulation seems to be that there needs to be "interviews" this time. Typing that last sentence made me chuckle. In a sad panda kind of way. :(

He said that other people will collaborate on the decision (Smith, McNair) but I think the ultimate decision will be made by Kubiak. I just think that there's pressure to bring in someone established and not a first timer. Other than that, I think Kubes can hire who he wants.

It's a novel concept. Bringing in multiple candidates, choosing the best one. I wonder why nobody's ever thought about doing that before.

That's why I added the addendum to my post about the chuckle. That it is even a new "stipulation" is sad. I mean damn, they hired two first time defensive coordinators without even doing interviews? Wow Gary.

Well he said it didn't matter, 3-4 or 4-3, and all the rumors involving Phillips...I think Uncle Bob probably told him to nut up or shut up this season. I can see the Texans being aggressive in FAgency whenever it begins and maybe super aggressive in the draft to get an impact player.

I know I know but it sure sounded that he has one year to make this work. Aggressive in the NFL is one or two players at the right position. I can see them making a point of going for it, knowing they have VERY little time to make it happen.

I know what he said, but if he finally feels that he's under a time crunch to turn the team around, he should probably opt for someone who runs a 4-3. I think retooling for a 3-4 is just naturally a longer process. That said, I wouldn't put it past him to hire a DC that runs a 3-4.

Wikileaks excepts from Kubiak's Defensive Coordinator Interview

What lessons did you learn from our time together in Denver can we use to make the Texans perform better?

When we were playing golf last week, did you kick the ball out of the Sand Trap?

OH GOD OH GOD, You have to help me.....he won't fire me no matter how badly I screw up, and there is a lynch mob hanging around just outside my garage. What can I do to get back to Denver without the stigma of quitting ending my hopes for a nice cushy OC gig?

Oh I'm sure they will sign "players" I just don't think they will sign Players. If you get the distinction.

They'll sign a few journeymen and maybe one solid starter and call it a day.

They build through the draft, remember?

At one point, Kubes was talking about Leinart and how he had replaced Warner in Arizona. But I missed the first part of the comment and when he was talking about "Matt" replacing a "Great QB" I thought he was talking about Schaub and was somehow calling David Carr a "great QB". LOL.

Bob McNair, the George W. Bush of NFL owners.

Heck of a job, there, Gary!

    Heck of a job.
