If he thinks the Texans are a rudderless ship, it would make sense. It's very possible that Kubiak gets fired next year, and that leaves him unemployed again. If there are other opportunities that seem more stable, it would make sense to go with them.

Hmmm. Should I even believe Barry's word? Same guy who said or floated out there that Kubiak will be fired; Hue Jackson, Troy Calhoun, Mike Sherman are 3 guys Texans are eyeing

Anyhow, if true, hello John Fox, Marvin Lewis?

Not sure if Fox will take a DC position though.

Of course there is. Got a guy in Kubiak who is walking a tight rope next year. Then again, maybe not. Wouldnt doubt McNair giving Kubiak a 7th year, even if they do fail.

Edit: What Major said. He and all the other coordinators likely have more job security elsewhere.

The ESPN report from Schefter this morning said Kubiak would be back and Phillips was one of a few to be considered, not that he would get the call. If Warner is right and Wade declines, options are available.

Hopefully a blowout by the Jags would change the situation

Actually, Warner never said Wade will decline. He actually bet Wade's sister a dinner that Wade would accept the job with the Texans.

Seriously? What competent DC would come to Houston, knowing Kubiak's situation? If they are aiming for the future HC job with the Texans, how will they even work together doing the season? It would probably become apparent. It's becoming even more clear, by Wade apparently not wanting to come to Houston because of Kubiak, that Kubiak needs to go. I bet Wade would come here if Cowher was the head coach.

What happens if Phillips comes in and the defense improves a little to 20-22nd in the league and the Texans go 8-8?

I'd be 90% certain that McNair would give the Kubiak/Phillips combo another year, reasoning that Phillips needs more time to install the 3-4 and saying how we're almost there and we just need to give the defense a chance to catch up to the offense.

If the last 5 years, and more specifically the last 9 weeks, haven't convinced Uncle Bob that Kubiak should be fired, I don't know what one more loss is going to do.

It will be interesting to see who the Texans bring in to interview. They can't hire Philips outright because of the Rooney Rule. If Marvin Lewis loses his job, it would be great to get him in for an interview.

Report: Kubiak will return in 2011

Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2011, 1:40 PM EST

Over the past week, momentum had been building toward the Texans keeping coach Gary Kubiak. There’s now a firm report that, indeed, Kubiak will be back.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Kubiak is safe, and that changes will be made to the defensive coaching staff. Despite indications that the Texans will be feasting from that which Rosenthall dubbed the Kubiak-Wade Phillips combo platter, Schefter says that the Texans “have other options.”

The biggest practical impediment to hiring Phillips is that the personnel has been compiled to run a 4-3 defense, not Wade’s 3-4. And so the Texans would have to tweak their defense on the fly in a season that very possibly will feature a reduced offseason program, little or no training camp, and a compressed free-agency period.

Reports are that both Coughlin and Sparano should be safe, though the Dolphins are getting beat by NE 31-0. Not sure what, if any, effect it has on Sparano's job.

The Rooney Rule doesn't apply to coordinators.
