As much as I love reading quotes like that from Drayton, I agree that a bit less talk would be wise. It can hardly help our bargaining position when our owner is shouting this to the heavens. Of course, he wouldn't be the first owner to do that. George in NYC talks up potential deals concerning the Yankees all the time, doesn't he? Maybe I'm just not used to hearing this from McLane, and it doesn't make a dime's worth of difference in negotiations. (sure seems like it would)
If Drayton/Purpura traded Orlando Palmiero for Manny Ramirez straight up, people would complain that we no longer have a reliable pinch hitter for late inning situations and call the trade the worst move in franchise history.
Absolutely. If the Astros won the World Series, people would complain that it wasn't in enough games. If they swept the World Series, people would then say that we should've swept the team we did and they wouldn't give any credit. If Drayton or Purpura cured cancer, people would complain that they didn't cure AIDS. On and on.
I understand that your exaggerating (at least I hope you are) but I don’t think people are that bad. I understand that quite a few people want a big splash in the free agent market and it hasn’t happened, but its just fans wanting more and there’s nothing wrong with that, hell that’s why they have sports radio and web sites. I am willing to give TP the benefit of the doubt and see what evolves over the next few months but to be honest he really hasn’t done anything to improve the ball club from last year. That is not to say I won’t give him a chance, but we came very close last year to winning it all despite some of the problems we had (lack of hitting) and as an Astros fan I hope they attempt to field a better ball club. I do agree that the majority of the signings this off season are overpriced but at some point the Astros have to do something or tell us what there plans are, to do otherwise would be a disservice to the fans who support the team by buying tickets, services etc. With all that said, I think Drayton wants to win and they will do something this off season to make the ball club better.
At what ponit though? I don't think RM95 was exaggerating. People are scaling the walls and staging a revolt, and it's not even February yet. Whining, for many, is an end unto itself--an existentially self-sufficient art form. Bleah.
I'm curious to know (not being sarcatic here) if theres a way to tell when the majority of FA signings/offseason trades are made by fpor the most part(i.e. is there a significant dropoff after Jan 5 or whatever the magic date was last yr with Beltran. For some reason, I just dont remember too many trades being made during spring training...at least nothing huge....but i honestly dont know.
If the Texans were on the way to a playoff birth - heck, if they were above .500, people would be less vicious about the Astros off-season. But coming off a World Series appearance and having the Rockets slow start and the Texans visiting the planet Suckatron - it has been magnified beyond what it should be. I'll say this though - the people who whine and complain about the people who whine and complain about the Astros off-season are just as annoying.
it's been rough for us all man texans suck...but not enough for a first pick, rockets are falling apart, and the astros look like beltran part 2 out there... i dont even know what makes me happy anymore
Well....ManRam really wants out...get er done!! A source told the New York Post that Manny Ramirez is even more eager for a trade now that Johnny Damon has left Boston and that he's willing to accept a deal to the Mets. Reports were that he was already willing to accept a trade to the Mets, so that's not really news. It's believed that there haven't been any talks between the two teams in quite some time. Unless something can be worked out with the Orioles, the Red Sox will probably hold on to Manny and see what happens. Dec. 22 - 4:52 am et Source: New York Post
More hot stove gossip.... The Orioles and Cubs have discussed a swap of Miguel Tejada and Mark Prior, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. A source told Rosenthal that talks are stalled because the Cubs want Erik Bedard along with Tejada and the Cubs want Felix Pie or a top pitching prospect in such a deal. The source also says the Red Sox are involved in talks and could be trying to land Prior, with Manny Ramirez going to Baltimore. Dec. 22 - 2:50 am et Source: FOXSports.com
Another FA passes by for Timmy... The Royals are close to signing Reggie Sanders to a two-year, $10 million contract. A reasonable signing, though there's still no good reason for the Royals to invest in a 38-year-old outfielder. Sanders has gone to the playoffs five of the six years, but that surely won't happen in Kansas City. Dec. 22 - 1:03 am et Source: FOXSports.com
Dude... this is seriously getting old. You're naming players that the Astros likely have ZERO interest in, even if they weren't coming off a World Series season. Reggie Sanders is a below average, injury-prone, outfielder... if he had any sort of spark left, the Cardinals would have kept him.
Yea, I agree Sanders' goose is probably cooked.....but I do have some interest in my 2 previous posts in which the Astros are NOT mentioned as players for Tejada and ManRam....hopefully we are UTR.
