No real surprise here. Butler was a straight salary dump by San Antonio and the Rox had to take him to get the deal for Scola. I harbored no illusions that he'd stick here as well because he's shown that he's simply been unable to pick up systems that require him to read and react such as SA's and now Houston's. That's why I got a chuckle out of those posts here describing him as a "steal".
i dont know why people get the notion that Snyder will be cut. Snyder is NOT getting cut. he actually can help this team. Novak will get cut before Snyder.
Butler's preseason play has been uninspired. The cut was not a real big surprise. Some of us had hoped given his size, age, and potential that he would the make the team but get stuck on IR, where CD could work on his game for a full year. Methinks Butler must have dogged his training sessions with the Rockets, which lead to his early exit.
Butler will cost less than half of that, only one year guaranteed. Reed mightn't be a starter but he's a proven energy guy NBA player. Even after Butler had a good year with the Knicks Isaiah didn't think he was worth it. I think most have stopped doubting his personnel decisions for some time now.
Butler signed a 3-year, $7 Million Dollar Contract...with the Spurs..he has 2 years left.. http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/houston.htm
I agree. Butler looks unmotivated on the court, and basically useless despite his size. If there is a need for a 5th big guy to play in addition to regulars Yao, Hayes, Scola, and Mutombo, they are better off just going small and stick Landry, Reed, or even Novak in there rather than go with the useless Butler. The undersized guys won't have any more trouble on D than Butler does anyhow.
Clutch, Patricia Bender, and Realgm have him down with a team option. http://www.clutchfans.net/players/jackie_butler/ http://www.eskimo.com/~pbender/contracts http://www.realgm.com/src_contractoptions/2008/
With Yao's injury problems the last two seasons and Deke's age I don't think it would be wise to let Butler go. I like the idea of having an insurance policy.
We can have a big with Butler's ability for $500,000 next off-season. I don't know why then haven't cut reed yet, what's his contract? maybe they are trying to move him.
are you sure about Hayes? not to say I'd advocate a trade, but I thought the no trading free agents was when you signed one from another team, not your own? I mean, the definition of a sign n trade is trading a free agent you just signed. i could be wrong, though.
Well if Adelman puts Scola and Hayes ahead of him in the depth charts, then he must be that bad. Besides, we can always get another guy if it comes to that like Tsakalidis and he would be more effective than Butler.
I didn't think cutting Harris would have an impact on Novak, but I agree with you. He will make the team. I feel it's between Reed and Snyder.Snyder possibly has a better chance of making it than Reed but anything could happen.
That's what I am talking about getting rid of Lucas and Butler doesn't hurt us at all and doesn't really help anybody else significantly!
http://www.nbpa.com/cba_articles/article-VII_8.php The rule doesn't seem to define a team's own free agent from that of another team's. This is a good listing of players with trade restrictions: http://www.realgm.com/src_trade_restrictions.php For the record I'm not advocating for Hayes to be traded as well.
If it comes down to a cost related move then I can understand. But if it comes down to choosing between cutting him, Reed or Novak -- somebody like that, I would prefer to stick with size capable of playing the 4/5 rather than one of those other guys.
Reed could have been one of Morey's picks from the Celtics. Charley Rosen thought he was a good energy player pickup for the Rockets and he's a Rockets hater. Apparently he's started a game at C for the Wolves so maybe he has the ability but just not the size over Butler.
I think once a player gets cut, it's considered that the team automatically exercise that team option. I could be wrong though. Bulter's sal is $1M more than Reed, so it probably means that there is a trade for Reed in the talk.
I am kind of disappointed about Butler too. I thought with Mutombo retiring soon, we need a future backup. And he looked promising enough, at least on paper. But heck, he's the poor man's Kwame, I guess. Now looks like Landry is going to stick, I think we have enough PF depth now to let some of these guys (mostly Scola) play some small ball at the 5.
