Excellent. Then let's draft a QB in the 2nd round, and let him replace our average QB in '08 or '09. (ducking tomatoes) Seriously, other than a worn-out welcome, how is Plummer any different from Carr?
He has responded to Kubiak's coaching and gotten a team to the playoffs. I'm not saying he can get the Texans to the playoffs but improvement from the quarterback position cant hurt.
Did he get them to the playoffs, or did the whole team with an excellent scheme get there? Honestly, Carr's not the answer but Plummer doesn't excite me, either. I don't know the rules with football contracts, but if it's going to cost the Texans cap room, or if they're going to have to pay Carr some portion or all of his salary to cut him, I'd hope for something better than Plummer. If all we're looking for is a stiff to take up space until a kid gets his legs under him, can't Carr do that? Now, if it doesn't cost money/cap space/whatever, send him on to greener pastures. It'll be better for both parties, and I wish Carr well.
Has any QB ever got his team to the playoffs without the whole team helping him out? We just need someone to hold down the fort until our young QB (that we hopefully draft) is ready to take over. Do you want another season just like this season with every call on sportstalk being about how Carr sucks? Or every thread in this forum ending up in a 19 page Carr's great vs. Carr sucks battle? No thanks.
Understood, but my question was about what it would cost the Texans (cap, salary?) to cut him loose. I'm not familiar--not at all familiar--with how NFL contracts and salary cap rules work.
I think it might be at the point where it doesn't matter - they just have to take the hit. It's one thing to lose the fans, but they also risk losing the players. If Dunta's comments last week are about Carr and represent more than just himself, another year of Carr and you may lose the focus/commitment/etc of the players too. (that's a big IF, of course) I'm not a Plummer fan AT ALL, but he's at least done two things that Carr hasn't: (1) win games and (2) had a pro-bowl season. Sure, that involves other players too, but nevertheless, he's done it, while with Carr, at best you hope he might one day be able to. One other plus with Plummer is that we know Kubiak, at least for a short period, figured out how to best use him. I don't think he's figured that out with Carr. Or if the best way to use Carr is not let him do anything, then that's a problem too.
What's wrong with Garcia coming to the Texans? I Think he could be a good fit. He doesn't make alot of mistakes, plus he is very mobile. He's 3 time Pro Bowler and has Playoff experience. If I'm not mistaken, I think Garcia ran a similar offense in SF that the Texans currently run. I know everyone wants to point out his time with the Browns & the Lions, but please it's the Browns & the Lions. I think Garcia would be a big improvement.
The tampa defense was also as stout as the old Ravens were at that time. Same with dilfer. Roethlisberger was really good last year except for the super bowl, but still, they all had either a dominant defense, or a very good D and one of the best running games in football. The Texans have neither of those things, and aren't close to doing so either. They have poor safeties, a poor 2nd DB/3rd DB, and no pass rush. Ryans, Williams and Robinson are the only defensive players worth anything on that roster, and on offense it's Andre Johnson and maybe Daniels. They also don't have good defensive tackles who force double teams, which is how edge rushers get more sack opportunities, and you stop the run. Not to mention they have a horrible QB. Yeah, this team will take at least 2 more good drafts to pull themselves out of this mess unless they hit a homerun with a transcendent player in the draft(like Vince has done in tennessee). Either peterson or smith would be good picks for the texans, as would a stud OT/DT. The fact I listed that many needs tells you how far away this franchise is from winning anything important.
This is what I've been saying. Yeah, you can win with a game manager when you have absolute dominance elsewhere. The Texans don't. So running away from drafting or picking up a playmaking QB (assuming one is there for the taking) is just foolish. That's like saying, "Jordan won championships with no help at center, so drafting Hakeem is unnecessary."
I'm sorry - but I just have to laugh at this comment - coming from a Texans fan...looking down his nose at the Browns and Lions???!?!?!?
LOL, you are right! I like to think we are little better than they are, but in reality we are pretty equal with those teams.
Records since the Texans' first season: Texans: 23-56 Browns: 28-51 Lions: 21-58 So, we can properly talk down to the Lions... but not the Browns. Hope that helps.
Kinda sad when the Browns can turn their nose up on you. Atleast they went to the playoffs. Lions and Texans are at the bottom and the Browns are slightly above that since they have the playoff spot in 02.
Don't blame Reeves. He said he would've taken VY, and that was before he took a snap for the Titans. Casserly didn't have Young in his top ten young qbs earlier this year. Helluva thing he has against VY.
I kind of think McNair has a thing against Vince as well, combined with unconditional ove for Carr. I'd hate to say this but it kind of gives me the feeling that he has a thing against a black QB. Every single time he is asked about Vince, he always responds, "he's a great athlete" Athlete. Never says "quarterback". Always "athlete". I'm probably wrong, though, I hope.
Wow, that's some pretty damning evidence right there. I thought you'd go with the fact that he never says thank you to the black bartender in the suite.
I don't have any evidence, i'm sure its wrong, I just get the vibe that he has something against black QBs, maybe hanging with Uncle Drayton too much.
I kind of have this REALLY bad feeling that they will bring Carr back for one more year. I bet they would feel like with another solid draft, and with so much money already invested in him, it would be the lesser of two evils to cut him loose before next season. I personally am ready for a change, but I can't help but wonder what would've happened with a healthy Charles Spencer and Dominick Davis...especially after seeing the Colts game. The thing that still gets me is that DC just can't complete the long ball very much anymore. And when he does, it's more like a "chuck and duck" pass into double coverage that Andre Johnson has to use his hands AND his size to catch.
Watching how well David Carr did yesterday when he got out of the pocket has convinced me that JaMarcus Russell would be great for this team. He would be just as good as Carr passing from bootlegs, but would have the additional threat of being able to scramble for 20+ yards.
