What I don't understand about our society is the very same people that are anti-abortion ...are also the strongest advocates for the death penalty and the proactive war against Iraq. Seriously, I don't understand it.

Do you stand for killing innocent lives ...or not? Which is it?

RE: the death penalty, the most alarming statistic to indicate a broken system is that like 90% of the people on death row are black. That is a HUGE indicator something is drastically wrong.

To the limited extent that that's actually true, makes perfect sense to me. New puppies are cuter and easier to control than old, aggressive ones with weird-colored fur.

 ALL deathrow inmates are innocent? A regime that commits genocide is innocent? Sorry, but im missing your logic on this one.

Really dumb analogy. You could say that about any legal issue. Would you feel the same if it were abortion instead of the death penalty. Regardless, a state district court judge should not ignore the previous rulings of the USSC.

Even more telling is that you would liken a human fetus to a cheeseburger.

What's wrong with torture? Criminals can deal out torture and suffering unto others, but when it comes down for them to face their crimes, we cannot do the same?

Do unto him, what he has done to others.

    Fair enough. I disagree.
If I was in jail on death row I would want to be released and given a billion dollars. I don't think that is the standard we should use. I am pretty sure another standard we should not use is to have trial judges overrule established precedent. I think defining crimes and punishments is a matter for the legislature and that the method available to enact changes in legislative direction is to vote for a different legislator.

Is this a quote from somewhere, or just the Rockets Red Code of Honor?

    Great - let's explore this.

Let's say a black man was on trial in east TX for murder,

Let's further say that there are several procedurally inappropriate issues arising during trial and/or sentencing.

You believe that he and his counsel should sit and wait for a voter referendum?

    1. Why do *all* deathrow inmates need to be innocent for his analogy to work. If one fetus is a tragic loss, the innocent who have been put to death are also tragic losses.

    2. So how many of the regime were killed, versus how many normal, innocent citizens were killed? The ratio is staggering, by even the Wolfowitz-Rumsfeld account.

His logic seems very clear to me.

It is a fact that the death penalty has murdered innocent people.

It is also a fact that innocent people have been killed in Iraq.

But apparently you are MORE worried about killing the guilty people that any innocents killed along the way are acceptable. So I have a suggestion. Next time there is a deathrow question, why don't you just volunteer to take their place? What's one more innocent life lost, afterall?

This thread was not about whether the death penalty should be legal, etc. We have gone WAY off track. This thread was about a district judge that has chosen to ignore the prior decisions of the appeals courts and the Supreme Court of the United States in interpreting the Constitution.

What's there to say? The case will move up to the next case and be decided there. I'm not a legal scholar and I doubt many here are either. The interesting part is how do those rulings impact people.

This is why I vote Republican in local elections even though I feel like I don't belong to those racist sobs.

There are no "innocent" people on death row...by innocent I mean good, moral, outstanding citizens who benefit society.

Smokey, with all due respect, you simply don't know that. What is worse, however, is that the gist of your post is very disturbing. You imply (and please correct me if I'm missing something in your post) that if someone who is innocent does get executed for a crime he/she was convicted of and is executed, so what? They aren't "good, moral, outstanding citizens who benefit society." I find the idea that you really believe that far most disturbing than the judge's ruling, or I would if I disagreed with that ruling.

Ref, it also isn't about fetuses and cheeseburgers.

This is some seriously f***ed up thinking.

"They may not have done THIS crime, but damn it, they're probably guilty of something else, so fry 'em up!!!"

...and let me guess, the best answer for Iraq is to drop a nuke on them? Afterall, if you were born in Iraq that means you are an evil person.

I wonder what Republicans think about abortions occuring in Iraq?

Ooooh, I have an idea for Iraq. Restrict abortion but as soon as the baby is born, sentence the mother to the death penalty for bringing another terrorist into this world. (see what I did there?)

Nice - so you believe the death penalty even if arbitrarily and innaccurately applied, is still good because it serves as an appropriate method of moral/ethnic cleansing and liquidation of society's undesirables - that's really something to be proud of brah.
