To me, the fact that he's an amputee and in a wheelchair is somewhat immaterial. This was a mentally disturbed person threatening a law enforcement officer with an unidentifiable metal object. Given that situation, I can't say I would have responded that differently. Folks in wheelchairs can wield a weapon and it just takes one finger to pull a trigger.

I agree. Dude could have had a gun. This isn't the middle ages. Bigger, stronger, even "able to walk" are prerequisites for "winning fights".

Officer repeatedly asked him to stop. Guy should have stopped.

Yeah he should probably get fired. I don't fully blame him for the incident though.

The fact that the guy was in a wheelchair makes firing the gun seem completely unnecessary....don't cops have tasers or something they could have used instead to disarm him since the guy was not mobile?

He could have kicked the wheelchair and sent it flying back a couple of yards. Once the amputee is knocked down, the cop is safe. It's not like a double amputee is going to run fast enough to catch a cop that's running.

Everytime cops do anything questionable people without all the facts or info of situation are here to call the pigs or power hungry. I wonder how many people risk there lives on the job everyday. Not a cop just saying...Gd. it feels like hs with people acting like cops are out to get you. Don't threaten a cop with a object when he ask you a question..... Problem solved.

So the guy in the wheelchair is within inches of the cop, swinging a pen, and the cop couldn't recognize that it was a pen? How big was this pen, that the cop mistakes it for a gun from a foot away?

You can't identify a pen or distinguish it from pretty much anything else?

How does a one-armed one-legged man and roll his eletric wheelchair up to the cop, while holding a pen in his only hand? Keep in mind, this had to happen in a split second. The cop didn't have time to determine if the object was a gun. Something doesn't add up.
