What's the point? I've seen photos that make even Houston look like a beautiful place for vacationing...

My family went to visit the Bird Nest/Water Cube area two days ago(which is about the same time Fran was looking at the place). The air was quite bad that day. Visibility was crap. I'd upload some photos if I have time.

For those who have not stayed in Beijing for extended periods of time(because there are "good" days in Beijing when the air is good), it really is hard to imagine the suckiness of the air quality here.

It's been 11 1/2 years since I was last in Beijing but I really don't remember noticing smog or pollution.

so what I was in Beijing in 1990 and everyone was riding around in bicycles and probably 1/3 of the people in beijing today were working in a field somewhere back then

all you chinese quit crying because Fran talks about the air quality. do you think he would have mentioned it unless it was noticeable ?

Not much. Only about 3 times as much harmful particles in the air(according to 2005 data).

If you go back today, you will see high-rises in places where it used to be farmlands. And highways in place of dirt roads.

A lot worse, LA is by the coast so it have sea breezes coming thorough to blow the pollution away. Beijing on the other hand gets dust storms and the bad air gets trapped by the mountain.

I lived in Beijing for 15 years til the early 2000, everyday I used to ride bike for about an hour to and from school. The air quality was quite bad in my area. And that was back then when still most people rode bikes to schools and works. I can't imagine how bad it is now. I have been to LA and lived near downtown Atlanta, the air quality is nowhere near as bad.

Yeah I remember the dust storms, ugh, nasty stuff, hurts my skin and eyes like heck. My skin got so purrdy after I came to America, it is like I turned from a fried wonton to a white dumpling.

There is Chinese Basketball Association games in Beijing every year. I think the CBA will use the stadium after the Olympics.

Several of Olympic stadiums are temporary ,they will be teared after Olympic is over just like you guys said. But like the basketball stadium may be used for cba.
Never forgetting the power of China's population.
