Smart veteran players, who are not old, inherently have to have some talent (or some tangible quality) in order to have made it/established themselves in the league.

And if Snyder was overlooked here, what kind of blame does Jerry Sloan get for getting rid of him?

I can't think of any ex-Utes who prosper elsewhere...Shandon, Eisley went from quality to bums...The Mailmen quit delivering...amazingly (? coachingly/systemly?) guys do well in SLC and just fail to do anything but fail away from JS.

Didn't Raja Bell play for Utah? But, your overall presmise is right on... and Snyder wasn't even good enough, or able to fit in on Utah (the ultimate "team" setting)... and we think he should be our 6th man.

Mo Williams and Carlos Arroyo have also found their ways in and out of Utah.

It is a lot easier to fit into "coach X's" system than it is JVG's system. There just aren't "his" types of players anymore. In the past offseason, I have considered several players that I would like to see in a Rocket's uni's. Just like everyone else I ask myself, yes, but is he a JVG guy. 9 times out of 10 that player is not and it is really starting to get old. A team with an offensive coach is much easier to find players because they can adapt pretty well unlike JVG's rigid pigeonhole type of players. There are only so many Battier's and Hayes around. We can't fill out the whole roster with these players anymore. Hopefully one of JVG's asssistant, Clifford or Thibodeaux will remain on to still run JVG's defensive scheme. If that happens I think we will be a pretty formidable team but then again our defense may have looked so good because we gave the other team very few possesions. Anyways, it should be an interesting offseason and we may get to see what some of our younger guys have to offer when they are playing for an offensive minded coach who will look the other way when they make a mistake.

Vecsey is reporting it as a done deal:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/05182007/sports/playing_coach_up_sports_peter_vecsey.htm

The Post also has learned the Rockets soon will announce Rick Adelman as their new coach, that more or less confirming my original Jeff Van Gundy-is-done story.

Adelman is a flawless choice for a team anchored by two superstars and two or three other key components. Never a self-promoter or one to demand players he must or must not have, he merely manages (never over-coaches) the personnel on tap and gets them to the playoffs - 14 out of 14 times as coach of Portland and Sacramento.

As expected, Van Gundy is back behind the microphone (for tonight's Game 6 Spurs-Suns telecast), where he has all the answers for everything that's wrong with the world and the game, and where his system always works perfectly.

It's interesting to note that the lone time one of his teams got anywhere worthwhile - the 1999 Knicks - is when players he diametrically resented coaching did their own thing.

I'm fine with Adelman. Contrary to popular belief I'm not a "JVG fan" so much as I want the best coach for the roster we are stuck with. Honestly I think Adelman is a lateral move at best. He hasn't won any more titles than JVG has and the Portland teams he took to the finals were vastly more talented than what the Rockets are bringing to the table. Likewise the Kings teams that were dominant had alot more talent than we do right now.

If anything the best front office move the Rockets could have done is to try and get Jerry West to come here as GM rather than Morey. Maybe Morey will work out, but it certainly puts the franchise in a dangerous spot by asking a rookie GM who's previous experience was with the losing Celtics to take over.

At any rate, as I have said many times since we lost to Utah, our roster improvements will have alot more to do with our success than JVG or Adelman.

The funny thing is that if we improve the roster and win more the JVG haters will say that is because Jeff is gone, but if we do worse it will be because there is a new coach learning a new system and he doesn't have "his" players yet..

it's clear that Vescey can be trusted sometimes,

Justice on the other hand should be ashamed of his stupid blogs and start looking for new friends so sometimes next year he can bring out something that's worth reading.

I am glad JVG is gone, now we can talk about a championship!

The coach is sooo very important with regard to how a team performs. Nelson improved the GSW's but he also had Chris Mullins backing him up. He got S. Jackson and Harrington from the Pacers which vastly improved the team. He brought Beidrins and Elis along and developed them. He didn't pull players for making mistakes. Despite the improved players he improved the Warriors record by 8 games. Is that a lot? well that's a 21% change so yeah in the NBA 8 games is a bunch. I'm willing to wait and watch to see how the 2007-2008 Rockets turn out.

A Look at the losers: Golden State Warriors
Posted May 18th 2007 4:10AM by Marcel Mutoni
Filed under: Warriors, Western, NBA Playoffs, Oakland

For three glorious weeks, the Golden State Warriors were the most popular basketball team on the planet. Led by a charismatic point guard, a free-spirited coach, and an emotionally volatile swingman, the Warriors breathed some badly needed life into the first round of the NBA Playoffs by taking down the heavily-favored Mavericks.

In the second round, they were eliminated by a Utah Jazz team that could run and gun with them, but also had the bigs inside to grab all the boards. It's time to look ahead to the 2007-2008 season.

Baron's Health: Davis has a history of injury problems, and even this past season, he only suited up for 63 games. There's no reason to believe that he'll be completely healthy next year. As long as Monta Ellis keeps improving (he will), Baron can take it easy from to time during the regular season and prepare himself for another strong Playoff showing.

Don Nelson's Situation: This is the biggest question going into next year. I hate to sound pessimistic, but if Nelson elects to stop coaching, this team is screwed. Sure, Chris Mullin might be the architect, but Nellie was the building's painter, interior decorator and head engineer. Without his guidance, swagger, and mind-expanding offensive strategy, this team is lost.

Big Man: The Utah series proved that the Warriors desperately need an inside presence. Yes, three pointers and fast breaks are great, but you can't win in the post-season without strong rebounding and interior defense. Andris Biedrins simply doesn't cut it. Nothing personal, Andris. If Mullin can bring in someone like Jermaine O'Neal or Kevin Garnett without giving up too many assets by next year's trade deadline, this team could end up turning the League on its head once again.
