the rockets did essentially rebuild or at least completely retooled their roster, they just did it on the fly and were still a good team. But you are right getting to the playoffs isnt the only goal but getting there is a right step.

utah did it well. they made some great draft picks, signed some key FA guys (being under the cap helps) and there ya go. unfortunately the rockets have had poor draft picks over the last decade, have not been under the cap so they have not been able to compete with the better FAs. they are stuck with filling in pieces around 2 players.

During the late 90's an early 00's, thats when the rockets were suppose to be rebuilding but we all know how those drafts and how those FA signings went. :(

I still think to leverage your future for the sake of the short term gain of just making the playoffs is still to steep of a price to pay.

The Rockets have employed two approaches to acquiring players. In the past they have constantly gone out and signed cheap, veteran older players. The fact is this was due primarily to all of the bad contracts handed out by Les/CD which severely limited the team's ability to go after quality players. As you well know, this approach hasn't worked out very well. This year, as a nice change of pace, CD went out and signed cheap younger players which didn't work out also. Now throw in the fact that under CD, they have basically blew off the NBA draft for past 6 years or so and it should not be too hard to see why there isn't more talent on this roster but feel free to continue to pin the blame on JVG. And try not to act too surprised when the next head coach brings in players to fit his system. For those of you keeping count, that would mark the 3rd new coach Yao will have played under in his 6 years in the league.

but what did they really lose that could be considered the future for this team? francis has not been a good player since he left, Cat has lost some skill, cato is on the verge of retiring, mo-tay has smoked himself r****ded.

really, the only guys you could argue about is rudy G and boki. Well it took boki another 2.5 years of suck before he figured out he can play when the whistle blows and rudy G is talented. rudy G you can argue about( but chances are he wont be a solid contributor on a good team for another 2-3 years), boki is a little more of a stretch.

But when you consider yao (freakishly large guy who are typically prone to injuries and short careers) and tmac (bad back), this team doesnt have much of a window to capitalize on their talents.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not placing the whole blame on JVG. Mgmt has just been crap the past few years collectively. Hopefully Morey can change my mind about the organization. I believe he a had a pretty decent record of coming up with players in Boston in the past, with Al Jefferson, Perkins, Delonte West etc. I don't think the experiment with young players ever amounted to anything because JVG never gave that a go.

If we don't add players this summer, I would be even more puzzled as to why we didn't make any changes during the transfer window. I know the new coach would bring in new types of players, and that's part of the reason why I was advocating for the coaching change. JVG's style just simple doesn't work anymore.

Does a change need to be made, hell yes...But is Adelman the best out there? Is it all JVG's fault, no, but he didn't develop the offensive games of both Yao and T-mac...

Whoever it is, I know we'll be better as Yao and T-mac will be hungrier...

That is the reason why you have to develop young talent. I am all for the trade with T-mac. Its the things that happened afterwards that puzzled me. With Two superstars eating up our cap, you know we need cheap "young" players that can score and create, but we decided to stick with veterans only.

Even if we hypothetically did go the veteran route. Miami had the balls to go out and get Shaq, and then surrounded him with decent role players. Say what you want about Antoine Walker, but offensively he is better than all our bench players put together at this point. To me, our team has been complacent about just keeping the wheel running, without really taking the necessary risks to move a step forward. I have no problems with failed experiments. Hell, even Eddie Griffin was a measured risk at the time and it was a good move if we did not have the beauty of hindsight. Its really how you recover and continue to try things out that matters... JVG along with Les or CD just didn't do any of that. You just can't take the safe route in creating a championship team... We have been stuck going the safe route now for quite some time.

i know what you mean fuse. But the 'develop' part depends on how long that development takes. rockets cant afford to sit back and wait multiple years for guys to maybe become good (remember there is no guarantee). That doesnt mean you cant get good young players, but those young players have to be more nba ready. Sort of how the rockets wanted brandon roy rather than rudy...why? b/c roy was nba ready. gay may have nba talent but his overall game is not that refined and probably wont be for a couple more years.

Just getting players in general... I'm not necessarily referring to the draft.

well i agree. players period..i dont care so long as they can play.

but to be honest, im sick of the rockets 'waiting' for players to become good. I want guys that are good.

We are also not doing much to help our players become good.

We wasted a year with Novak, Vspan, and even Snyder on the bench. If we don't need them, why have them?

not necessarily wasted. again, i dont believe that just b/c they didnt get as much p.t. as you or i'd like means that they did not get better or improve.

novak was a project and after seeing him play it was obvious that the kid just needs time. Not necessarily pt.

vpsan - same. he has to work under more control

snyder - he showed improvements but for him its all between the ears. he just does stupid things on the court.

Novak is more than just a project, he's so far away from being NBA ready. I'm just wondering why we even got him when we could of gotten Milsap.

Vspan just needs playing time at his natural position.

Snyder is an interesting speciman. He played pretty well in stretches, I think he's still confused about what his assignments are... the jury is still out yet whether or not that is the fault of the coach or the player. I guess we will see what happens next year when a new coach rolls around.

I guess I'm just a firm believer that actual playing time is when players actually improve, instead of just skirmishes or drills in practice.

you're right on novak. I dont think he will be anything other than a specialist. And yes, millsaps is the kind of guy the rockets need at PF. I cant believe they slept on him.

vspans natural position? do you mean sg?

i think the injury did set snyder back a great deal b/c he did seem to be improving. and by the time he got back he and bonzi were fighting over time. he's nice to have on the bench, but i dont think that you really conut on much more from him other than an athletic body.

Why is that people think what works for one team must also work for another?
I hear people say Novak and V-Span are not meant to be in the NBA and we should have gotten Millsap. I mean the only reason you even hear his name is because Utah made it in the conference finals. Had he been on some other non-playoff team then maybe he wouldn't get the exposure. Same could be said if Novak was playing for Phoenix or San Antonio and if he made some open 3 pointers then people would be salivating his name like he is some great steal. Fans over think too much because at the draft Millsap was relatively unknown and scouts reported him as another undersized PF. He had never played any real competition outside the WAC. So given those things about Millsap, Rockets made the better choice by selecting a known commodity. No if you player happens to excel under one coach or system that doesn't mean he would do the same in another.

That's why you can look at TANGIBLE attributes to make projections of players based on what you know... their height, their body type, whether or not they can shoot, how they played in college, etc.

Millsap is raw, but has decent size (better than any PF we have), strength, and was a force in college. We know Novak can shoot, but we can also see he is rail-thin, won't be rebounding with the big boys without some weight training, and likely isn't a speed demon/leaper on defense. We know that V-Span can pull off some sweet passes... we also know that those can sometimes result in turnovers (which doesn't concern me as much as others here). The thing that concerns me the most is his shot... it has to be consistent or else NBA defenses will catch on, and won't let him drive to the hole every time.

Given all the tangibles, the Rockets still need more talent at the 3-8.

I don't think we need talent necessarily but smart veteran (not old) players to play alongside Yao and T-Mac. I still believe some on the current players are being overlooked and could really become special if they are given the chance by the next coach.
