Ex-Astros pitcher dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound

Former Astros pitcher Brian Powell died earlier this week from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a spokeswoman for the Decatur (Ga.) County Sheriff's Office.

Powell, a native of Bainbridge, Ga., would have turned 36 on Saturday.

Powell went 2-2 in 10 appearances for the Astros in 2000 and 2001. He was acquired by the Astros as part of a seven-player deal with the Detroit Tigers for catcher Brad Ausmus and pitcher C.J. Nitkowski in 2001.

Powell played for Detroit, San Francisco, Washington, Philadelphia and the Astros during his major-league career before retiring in 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Bainbridge, Ga.

Darn thats horrible, meet the guy and seemed really nice. He became the whipping boy in the late 90's, felt bad for the guy.

Why was he a whipping boy? The only "late 90's" he pitched in was in the second half of 1998.
