This is a no-brainer. But too simple to ever work, of course.

sometimes you have to talk on your phone when you're in the car, but I try to always use a bluetooth headset.

when my phone rings i dont answer it unless im at a red light, it's bumper to bumper taffic, or when nobody is on the highway at night

I got a hands free blue tooth for my truck. Best purchase I've made in a while. No different than carrying a conversation in your car.

The sooner they make holding a phone up to your ear illegal while driving, the better.

Oh crap. I remember yesterday getting on the Beltway and seeing cop cars/emergency vehicles had sectioned off the Westpark Tollway exit. Figured there had been an accident and I was hoping it wasn't serious. That's just really, really horrible.

Maybe it's a good idea to make handsfree headsets compulsory for drivers. Nothing annoys me more on the road than seeing a driver obviously distracted while using his cellphone and not staying in his lane/slowing down traffic/crawling in the left lane etc. UGH. If you don't know how to make the road your top priority while driving, then don't answer that phone.

I was getting pulled over once and I didn't see an appropriate place to pull over. Therefore, I kept driving at a slow rate as to let the officer know I wasn't trying to run. I finally was able to pull into a parking lot. Right before I pulled in the parking lot, the officer floored his cop car and was pulling around front of me. He was going to block me. It hadn't been more than a minute since his lights went on. The morning was a dark one with thunderstorms and it was very difficult to see. When he turned his lights on, I was on a busy road with rush hour morning traffic. My concern was there wasn't a safe place to pull over so I drove a little further to find a safe place to pull over.

Then, he barrelled up to my car window in a fit of rage and yelled "if a police officer has his lights on, then that means pull over immediately!"...like he was going to take my head off. Then, I responded "sir, I was looking for a safe place to pull my car over so you wouldn't get hit by a car in these hazardous weather conditions during rush hour traffic". Apparently, the officer couldn't even fathom this is what I was trying to do and thought I was trying to lead a low speed chase. F-ing moron...LOL. So, he continued to bite into me and I'm positive he tacked on an extra infraction just because he was being pissy about the whole thing. He even lied about my speed. Apparently, he expected me to just stop IMMEDIATELY on the road as soon as his lights went on regardless of conditions...not look for a safe place to pull over. Well, excuse the f*ck out of me! Never again will I try to be considerate in such a situation.

This has little do with this story other than noting the dangers involved when pulling someone over. This is a tragedy...no way around that. However, I would think a cop would want a driver to pull over to a safe place within reason during a traffic stop. But, I got blasted for doing so. So, I'm not going to be so considerate next time. I will submit that officers make mistakes in judgement that can lead to these accidents. I'm not saying that happened here, however.

Also, when it comes to cell phones and driving, I never could understand why the people who do the most talking on cell phones refuse to buy a hands-free solution. It's always the people who need a hands-free set the most, like all the utility vans for DirecTV, plumbling, pool, electrical, etc. . Their always on the phone with one arm holding the phone. I don't understand these freaking morons. The people who talk the most should be hands free. It's not that difficult to figure out whether you are one of those people. Sure, it's more convenient if it's built into the car's audio system. However, there are still hands-free solutions for cars that don't have built-in bluetooth in their car systems.

I know cops feel they have to write tickets on the driver's side but, judging on how many cops have died doing so, it may be wise to approach on the passenger side or the side not facing the traffic. I think it is less likely to get you killed in the line of duty.

Did he, by any chance, go to Prince of Peace Catholic in NW Houston? I saw a photo of him on the news today and he looked like an officer than regularly attended mass there.
