I don't know much about herniatic disks, but from what I understand the pain comes when the spine is compressed, right? Like if you fell on your butt.

Well, like everyone says, every herniation is different. Sura might bounce back just fine or he might never be the same player. It's a huge bummer, but what can you do? Exactly what Sura and the Rockets are doing-- taking care of it as soon as possible.

    Good luck, Bob! (And Boki...)

Since we are into medical confessions (sounds like we could start our own rehab clinic), I will admit to a bulging disc in my neck, C7. I live with it, but I couldn't as a pro athlete (which I wasn't, to be clear). Sounds like Sura is out for the season, very disappointing. I thought he might start. Somebody better step up.

This guy had a history of back problems. It has even been stated in this article. Now look: he played almost all the games last year (contract year), signed a relatively long term contract with Rox, then got hurt during the workout in Clevland and they said it was a new injury. But do you really believe it was just a coincidence?

This man must have played under pain last year. What I meant was his case is similar to A. Griffin's. Griffin is a solid players when he played for Dallas, but Don Nelsons still gave him up after his contract expired. Why, because they knew he had a knee problem.

CD has to be looking for some backup help. I doubt the Rox stays with Gaines as the only backup to TMac. Wonder when the surgery is? No doubt they will be all ears to see how it goes.

Essentially what happens is the spine's channel thru which the nerves reside is blocked and the nerves are affected, hence deadleg. It can be excrutiatingly painful.

I was back on the basketball court on the 90th day after a double laminectomy. 90 days, BTW, is 13 weeks, not 8.

I'd be surprised if Sura has much value to the team before the ASG.

Why, he missed training camp, missed nearly half season and got traded before new season starts. It is difficult for any players, especially bench players, to do A LOT better.

Basically, yeah. The disks rupture and put pressure on nerves, which cause pains in your legs.

Before my herniations were diagnosed, I was starting to think I tore a hip muscle or had a torn ligament in my knee.

Hey now would be the perfect time to use that trade exception and fill this roster void till the all-star game....oh wait! that won't happen b/c the owner's a cheapass! in fact that's how we ended up w/ bargain basement 99cent store players like ward and sura in the first place!

Absolutely I do. No team is stupid enough to sign a player to a FULL MLE contract if that player can't pass a physical. If his back was hurt when we signed him, he would never have passed the physical. Pretty clear cut IMO.

Not everything the Rockets do is a conspiracy.

I meant Don Nelson knew he could do better than having Griffen on his squad, and he did with Howard and Daniels, A LOT better, no?

Not necessarily. A lot of the pain comes from the fact the herniated portion of the disc (which can actually rupture through the disc) bumps up against nerves that lead to the legs, arms, etc. When those nerves are irritated - that's where the pain kicks in. I've had kidney stones and I lived for 2 months with the herniated disc (I had both of those during the same month as a matter of fact). If given a choice, I'd rather go through kidney stones again, I think although it's close.

There are all kinds of levels of herniation. I walked to the car 4 hours after my operation (albeit very slowly and gingerly). Then I wasn't allowed to leave my apartment to even get the mail for 2 weeks - I pretty much was bed-ridden during that time. Other people are out far longer because the type of herniation is severe. There are probably people posting right now that don't even know they have a herniated disc and just brush it off as "back pain" or a "sprained back".

Without knowing what type of herniation and its extent, you can't guess things like whether or not he'll be out for weeks, months, or the whole season.

Unfortunate for Bobby - I feel bad for him. Ultimately i think the Rockets will be better off without him though. It's no secret that I'm not a big fan. You just hate to see a guy go down with a painful injury like this. They'll be much better off with a steady hand like Harris in the backcourt over the erratic Sura and maybe now we can finally see whether we wasted yet another 1st round draft pick (#15 to be exact) a few years ago.

What's the panic? JJ played the 2 guard at times last year.

If JVG can zone up the defense a little bit, Padgett can play some 3 which will allow JJ to play more 2. Padgett at least has a 3 pointer. Sura was going to a be just a bench guy anyway. This guy would have been a square peg in a round hole with TMac and Yao on the floor. Everyone would be leaving him open on the perimeter like they did with Mark Jackson and Steve Francis.

Ward is getting dissed bigtime, but he's more important to Sura at least from my perspective.
