He can't. If he plays for us he has to be traded here.

He can leave 30 million on the table to go play for Miami.

Deckard, Im speaking from Toronto's perspective, not from Bosh's perspective. And that 30 million dollar figure is overblown. The apples to apples comparison is more like 5 million.

The owner of the Raptors is the MLSE. Im sure they had multiple meetings with Colangelo about Bosh at the trade deadline. I am also quite certain BC convinced them that they shouldnt trade Bosh at the deadline because they would have a wonderful 2nd half run and Bosh would resign and everything would be wonderful.

So ill ask you a hypothetical... if you were hired in 2006 to build around Bosh and you had cap space and the #1 pick in the draft as tools to do so, then four years later, your team is riddled with bad contracts and the franchise player is leaving via free agency after repeated dissapointing team performances...Do you really think BC is in the position is in a position to hardball?

The guy is in "save my job" mode. He can't afford to gamble on losing Bosh for nothing to Miami or Chicago if a fair offer is on the table.

Lets say Bosh is sold on the idea of coming to Houston and Morey offers Battier + Jeffries + Hill + NY 2011 pick + the rights to Sergio Llull. If BC says "no, abosolutely not unless Brooks is included"...then Bosh's agent can say, well you should know we have an offer from Miami/Chicago which we are prepared to take if you are insistant on screwing over Chris.

With that, Colangelo is faced with explaining to the MLSE how not only did he bet wrong on Bosh staying, but also missed out on Battier, Hill, a lottery pick and a prospect by asking for too much.

Thats the dynamic of this negotiation.

No it's 30 million. The reason it's 30 million because he can get an extra year on his contract, and instead of 12% raises he can get 15% raises (or I don't know the exact percentages, but I know it's more). So instead of 90 million over 5 years (I'm guessing, don't quote me on this), he'd make 120 over 6 years. That's where the 30 million comes from. The TOTAL salary.

At this point, why wouldn't Toronto then go "ok, we'll do a trade with Miami then and not Houston".

    And then Houston is screwed.

I don't understand where people got the idea that Bosh can bluff a Rockets trade by threatening to sign with Miami.

You'd have to get within 15%, which would be about $12 mil. Also, you're being completely ridiculous in that comparison - you're counting Beasley's salary ($3-4 mil) as nothing, yet you're factoring in the salaries of Hill and other prospects that would be coming from the Rockets' end?

The Raptors are going to fill out their roster. They're not going to fold up shop and pull a Donald Sterling. Realistically, the Rockets don't have to give them $14 mil in meaningless salaries. At least half of the $12 mil, if not more, would be in the form of guys like Hill, Budinger, Taylor, etc. - cheap contracts for guys that can potentially fill roles on Toronto's team.

If, say, they made a deal with Miami for Beasley and not much else, they're not just going to pocket that extra money. They would spend it on young free agents trying to find a diamond in the rough, much like Budinger and Taylor. Really, that part of it would be no different to them.

Now yes, a part of the proposed deal - the expiring contract of a veteran like Jeffries or Battier - wouldn't mean a whole lot to them, and would represent excess salary for one season. But the excess is more like $7 mil, not the $15-20 mil that you're suggesting.

JC's hand is weak but you are offering too little for Bosh. A better offer from another team will be more acceptable to the Raptors,as long as no one guts their team for him. Jeffries will be cut,Battier isn't a great fit on a rebuilding team. Hill is raw.

    No, its ~five million.

Thats the difference in salaries for the first five years for both contracts, ie an apples to apples comparison.

You cant compare a six year contract to a five year contract by looking at the total contract amount. You are completely ignoring any new contract he recieves after his fifth year runs out.

Now its a fair point that the new CBA may not allow a huge contract in the sixth year, but it could still be a considerable amount, perhaps 15-16 million. The uncapped team could also simply offer a one year extension after three years to make it equivilent to a six year deal, although at a slightly less amount of total amount.

Like I said, the 30 million amount is overblown.

Except Miami doesn't have the assets the Rockets do, and everyone knows it, so it's highly doubtful Toronto would say that.

Here's something I'm not seeing mentioned:

If Toronto just lets Bosh walk, their payroll will be 46,326,000, which is $9.8 million under the $56.1 million cap. They could have another $854,389 if they don't keep Sonny Weems (team option), though I don't see that happening.

Being under the cap is under-rated, as your overall talent level is theoretically much less than it would be if you were close to the LT. Still, being $10 million under is not a bad place to be.

BTW, Toronto would not be so interested in Hill if they thought he would never be more than a marginal starter.

Houston isnt screwed, they still have a trove of assets to use on another player or keep themselves.

And a Miami package would include a second round pick and trade exception. Which package would you rather have?

Saleem, I think thats just about what it will be.

It has already been reported Toronto inquired about Battier earlier in the year, and Justice recently said they were intrigued by Hill and Lull. I think that package while not terribly exciting, is solid for a rebuilding team.

If that is all it takes,it's fine with me. I don't think it's solid though, for the reasons that I gave in my previous post.

What it tells me instead is that New York is a bunch of idiots. That's hardly an unreasonable conclusion.

You have to include the salaries of their first round and second round pick this year, barring they trade them. Thats around 2-3 million off of their potential 10 million.

Isn't the bottom line whether Bosh wants to sign with the Rockets or not? If he says Houston is where he wants to be, the Raptors will work to accommodate him (while still getting something of value in return for a star player that could leave for nothing).

Obviously Bosh has the most leverage here, and while all three parties need to work together to find a solution, it's not like Toronto can just sign and trade him somewhere else for a better deal. The Rockets definitely have enough assets to make a sign and trade beneficial for the Raptors, and that's what matters.

Well, we will see what happens.

If there is one thing we have learned, its that Morey never does whats expected and he usually comes out better than expected.

Is it me, or you didnt coment anything about THIS

"Anyway, I'm curious of what bosh supporters say of the lack of leaderhip bosh showed in toronto, compared to Chris Paul was able to achieve, with a similarly talented cast...
It was not responded in that thread, I hope someone shows an excuse of Bosh not being able to carry on his team in the East.... and Paul being able with less time in the league...."

He could be cool, he could be a 'leader' in your terms, but in many seasons, he wasn't able to carry the team in the east into the achievement CP3 was able to do in the west, with similar supporting cast....please, I'm waiting for that comment, not if he's a cool guy or donates to charity....will you comment on the lack of results for the team?
