IF Yao were to go out with a season ending injury this early in the year, would we be able to apply for another injury exception?

Great question....you mean for THIS season, right?

I believe that ship has sailed, but not a bad thing to ask about.

I'm referring to this season, considering Yao's contract is up at the end of the year.

EDIT: I just found the answer to my own question.

If a player is injured or dies between July 1 and November 30, then the team can file for a disabled player exception worth 50% of that player's salary, or the league average salary (MLE, basically) - whichever is smaller (in this case, the MLE).

So we would be able to apply for an exception, but it's not guarantee that we would get it, and if we did it would only be worth about $6,000,000 even though the disabled player in this case makes $17,000,000. Kind of a let down.

There is also an exception for a player who retires for medical reasons while under contract. In that scenario, the team would have to wait one year to apply for the exception, and they would still be on the hook for his salary even though it would not be reflected in the cap.

This is why I don't buy any season tickets packages for any Houston sports franchise. Better to buy ticket by ticket randomly. Houston Sports Franchises always set you up to BS you like this.

Still, who is out there that you could get for that kind of $$$$..before the season, sure, could have used it to go at some restricted free agents, but now...probably not that useful.

I am still believing that Yao will come back to dominate NBA. It is only 7 games of this new season, and he just come back from 1 and half years of not playing any games. Be optimistic and enjoy the game, fellow clutchfans!!
