Oh, and in the interest of disclosure, it says he's only pitched like 21 innings in relief, which isn't really enough time to make a definitive decision. He very well might become a good reliever, given time. I just don't personally think that he's cut out for it. To me, the starter-to-reliever transformation works best for guys who have good command but a limited pitch selection - 1 or 2 good pitches. Like Wagner, Lidge, and Elarton (well, before the injury). Redding has a number of good pitches, but his location sucks.
Usually, the more mentally tough guys are the relievers...so thinking he is going to excel in the bullpen is a little far fetched IMO. It takes a more mentally tough guy to come into a game down a run with runners on in the 6th inning than it does to make spot starts
Alyson Footer addressed this topic in one of her Q&A's... and she said that the club feels that due to Redding's lack of control at times, he would NOT be ideally suited for the bullpen. The most important thing for any bullpen pitcher is to throw strikes, regardless of what they're throwing. I know that he can probably work on his control issues when he isn't trying to mix up his pitches so much... but this is the #1 factor as to why he's still being considered only to start.
I am so glad he is going to be back for one more year, I can still wear my Redding jersey with pride.
supposedly he has the best stuff....as what i remember the astros saying......but he can't put it together....I say send him to AAA....have him learn Fastballs aren't the only pitch to go too when your in trouble....man...if only Lidge can teach him the slider....
man, i keep forgetting we don't have miller anymore..... what is our rotation look like... Oswalt Clemons Pettite Backe Munro/Hernandez/Reading is that right???
Sorry if this has been posted somewhere. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/scorecard/02/10/truth.rumors.mlb/index.html The Diamondbacks apparently have had interest in Astros right-hander Tim Redding, but Houston has been asking for either closer Greg Aquino or setup man Mike Koplove. -- Arizona Republic
