He NEEDS to be traded for a competent starting PG until KB is ready.

Rafer Alston's problem is he shoots 3pts better than his miserable 2pts attempts (tear drops, floaters and even layups, you name it). So if he misses his 3s, he is dead. He tries to penetrate but he can never finish it. I haven't seen a guy airball so many floaters and layups in the NBA. He is truly a streetball legend. It is sad but also funny to see him play. :D

when u are 0-9 quit shooting...........you think he would have gotten the idea but he kept jackin em' up ending the night 2-14. that is BAD, with the WIDEOPEN shots he has been getting i could shoot a better percentage. his job is to distribute but he no longer really does that all he does is bring our shooting percentage WAY down 2-14 = .142 WOW THATS BAD, and couple that with the last few games and i feel it is evident RAFER IS HURTING US!!! JVG says there is no change to come whats up with that ignorance, pull your head out of your bum bum van dummy.

I reckon some doses of And1 style of playing for Alston will break his slump.....just throw him in against the suns when the Rockets have a 31 point lead, and JVG will tell him 'Right Rafer, I want you to make NBA.com's Top Ten Assists of the Year.' who knows? It might break his funk and make him so excited at playing Bball that he can regain his shooting touch.

Totally agree. Yao is so tall and nimble. Before Alston, Yao never had problem with entry pass. Can you imagine Yao/Nash pairing? Yao as the recipient of Steve Nash's dazzling passes, featured in a fast-breaking style, is definitely an ESPN highlight material, every night!

He wasn't averaging 7 assists a game when Yao and TMac were both healthy. Everyone keeps calling him a true PG, but he is THIRD on the team in FG attempts. We have a guy that is shooting a horrible 35% from the field and he is jacking up more shots than any role player. He is a terrible finisher and seems to have the WORST tear-drop in the NBA (as a PG). You can tell he has been looking to score and his assists are down because of it.

I keep hearing you guys say he is a below average defender, but we never get lit up by opposing point guards. Often times our system of trapping and shading the penetrator towards the center could be mistaken for bad defense but I just don't see him playing the matador defense that he's accused of.

If anything he does what he is asked in our system, keep pressure on the ball move your feet and play the passing lanes on the weak side. As far as I can tell he does this far better than any other guard on our roster, that is the main reason V-span hasn't sniffed the court lately, because he takes too many risks on defense and because he turns the ball over too much, until he can do that JVG is not going to play him and he's correct to do so.

As for the people suggesting that Nash would pair better with Yao or the people imagining players that don't exist (good defenders that can drain the 3 and penetrate and dish, who the hell are you describing Dwayne Wade?) , quit dreaming. Please offer viable realistic solutions. Heck, why stop at Nash? Why don't we get Lebron James and play him at the one he would pair great with T-mac and Yao.

His assists are not high b/c our offense doesn't have the ballin his hands most of the time like say...the Suns. Tracy gets the assists, b/c he's the decision maker on the court. Rafer is just expected to take (and hit) the shots given to him, penetrate when the play is busted, D up the opposing PG, and don't turn the ball over.

So it seems he's doing his job, minus the whole making part. It doesn't surprise me he's 3rd on the team in attempts. I would expect it from a player with his skill set. He just has to make.

He can't possibly be as bad as his recent slump. Remember, Tracy was shooting horribly for most of this season. Rafer's career numbers were never stellar, but his recent shooting is obviously below *his* norm.

don't know how true this is but on 610 this morning heard that steve francis was going through a buyout with new york and that his two choices to play was houston and the 76ers. the 76ers i do not understand because they just hired larry brown as a gm or some sort, and he and larry didn't get along in new york. now saying all that i really don't know if he would fit our system considering he must dominate the ball at all times. what do you guys think? do you all want to see stevie back what are you all opinons?

Of course his deficiencies are magnified when he's in this type of slump. He's a very frustrating player to watch. What I'd like to see Rafer do is scrap is crappy tear-drop shot and take the ball all the way to the bucket. He's not the biggest guy but at the moment I think he stands a better shot of getting to the line by creating contact than trying to float it to the rim.

    Solid points. :D
Since we brought in T-mac, we had 2 major deals done under JVG. Battier's acquirement is a good one so far, but how about Alston? Do you really believe JVG will easily give up Alston? Of course not! Giving up Alston means JVG was wrong, wrong doing means bad judgement, bad judgement means loss of game, loss of game means on job, no job means no money, no money means no honey, ..... ;)
I am tired of talking about Alston. It is just d*** depressing. Final words on Alston: No noise in playoff if he shoots over 10 times a game. :(

If JVG was too stubborn to admit being wrong, he wouldn't have been on Mike James' doorstep the first second he was allowed to this past summer. I don't think JVG is being stubborn at all, there just hasn't been any sign that our other options are worthy of playing time, so we're stuck with the guy who can atleast do some things right.

Are you being sarcastic? When has Yao not had a problem with entry pass? It's one of the most consistently b****ed about fact with the rockets. Nash is awesome, but do we need Yao to run even more than he does right now? Alston controls the tempo (like Vince Young), something that's severly under-appreciated.

Please stop comparing Rafer to Vince. I read another post like this and it made me laugh. They don't play the same sport so there is not point of comparing them. Vince was great at UT and is getting better already in the NFL. Rafer has never been great in his field.

yao cant run the fast break lanes like stoudemire can and he doesnt cut as sharply either. nash needs a fast, super finisher to get his slick assists on the fast break. sorry, but i dont want yao running any more than he is now.
