Is there a history of guys joining the Rockets getting less FTs as a result of that? I know every fan of every team thinks their team is getting screwed at the line. However, I don't see any evidence of it. If you do, please provide.

Lets take a look at a few random perimeter players who joined the Rockets by trade:

    1. Tracy McGrady: Tracy McGrady's FTA/FGA did not decrease between his last Orlando year and his first Houston Year. They are essentially the same.

    2. Ron Artest: Ron Artest's FTA/FGA ratio dropped a bit as a Rocket. 4.9 FTA to 15.9 FGA with SAC before 3.8 FTA to 15.2 FGA with Houston, but that's probably a result of him not driving as much and chucking more Js-- despite similar number of FG attempts per 36 minutes, Ron's 3PT attempts went up by almost 2 a game. It's not a matter of him not getting calls because he's a Rocket. It's a matter of his role changing with more 3pt spot up duty (makes sense with Yao Ming).

    3. Kyle Lowry: Even more recently, Kyle Lowry averaged 5.4 FTA to 9.1 FGA per 36 mins in his last 49 games in Memphis. This season, he's averaging 5.5 FTA to 9.3 FGA. Again, essentially the same. As far as I can tell, when Kyle Lowry throws his body around, he tends to get a lot of calls. That red uniform (or the white one with red trim, or even the new yellow and red one) hasn't hurt him with the refs.

Now, interestingly, Lowry did experience a dip in FT attemps in his first 28 games as a Rocket: 3.8 FTA to 9.6 FGA. What happened there? My guess is either (1) different role: Rockets were playing less of an open-court game, decreasing his ability to draw contact on the break, he also probably spotted up (mostly for 2 pointers) than he did in Memphis, (2) he was still getting use to his new teammates and coaching staff and was trying not to get too wild.

However, overall, when Lowry, or any other player, drive to the basket at the same rate (and assuming similar health status, etc), there is nothing to indicate that being a Rocket will decrease one's ability to draw fouls.

Unless there is real evidence that players get more screwed on calls once joining the Rockets (and I suspect if there is such evidence, Daryl Morey would know about it), I don't see why Kevin Martin will get less FTs assuming he continues to attack the basket at the same rate as before.

Yes, you would rather Martin's eFG also stay up-- i.e. his 2 pt %, 3 pt % and FTA all stay even or go up, but the fact is as long as points scored on FTs also count in games, one should consider FT attempts.

I think Martin needs to stop thinking and just play the game. I think he still think about what the fans think of him here in Sacramento and Houston as well...it gets into your head and make you lose focus. That's what i sense....

Lowry, while still effective at drawing fouls, still hasn't posted a ft per 36 min rate that measures up to any of his memphis seasons. I'm going strictly by the numbers here because I didn't watch much of him in memphis so I can't compare how he is here and how he was there.

When Artest came here, he posted his lowest ft per 36 of his career if you take away seasons in which he didnt play enough to qualify. Ofcourse part of it was that he was taking more 3s, but having most of the games, it was still obvious when he took it to the rack he wasn't getting many foul calls.

Also, I may be a little biased but Yao's ft per 36 has gone down from 9.2 to 7.1 to 6.1 now in the past 3 years, which I find ridiculous because his game hasn't changed all that much and he gets even less respect from the refs.

As a Kevin Martin fan, I've seen every single NBA game he's played. When he's trying too hard, he rushes his shots, which is what he was doing Saturday night and early on Sunday night. He's usually a quick shooter, but quick and rushing are two different things. He was rushing and that's not good.

As for foul calls, it all depends on the refs. Sometimes they acknowledge that he's getting fouled in there, and other times they just ignore it. I wouldn't say it's anything to do with becoming a Rocket, but I understand the frustration. Kobe and LeBron get all those calls all the time. But other players don't.

Kevin's is a good defender, but he's no Artest. He works hard and uses his quickness to get steals, but he's not going to be a Kobe-stopper.

Kevin was the only bright spot on the Kings for the last several years and paid a lot of dues. Despite all the losing, he's been a class act on and off the court and will be an asset to the Rockets and the community.

I'm looking forward to his new team win a lot of games in the future!

    GO ROCKETS!

Needs practice, I thought Wells, Artest, Martin all were all in RA system in SAC, how much different can the offense be. Those three were suppose to have the easiest time adjusting because they were all coached by RA before in the same Princeton & Motion O. I don't understand the sub patterns sometimes & I'm a basketball coach. RA needs to ride the hot hand instead of forcing the starters back in to the game, who are cold. Any basketball coach should be able to tell who is having an off day by the 3rd & 4th quarter. And whoever is having the better day should be in during crunch time during the 3rd & 4th. If Ariza going to keep on chucking those ill advised 3's because RA & DM thinks Ariza going to be the new Paja, B Jackson, Bibby, Doug Cristie, white chocolate,Kevin Martin,(who are all wing players who in RA system are suppose to be able to hit the transition 3, the organization better put a performance base stipulation that Ariza wake up and shoot at least 100 3's before he get to practice and 100 3's by himself after practice. Obviously us fans cant stop the shots that we frequently see Ariza take, but he put in more work to become that 3 point specailist that RA is trying to develop him into.

It is weird that they keep saying it's the same Adelman system from Sac. Because the Rockets don't have a Vlade or a Webber at the elbow passing the ball. I did see that a bit when Yao was playing, but without a passing big man, it's a different kind of Adelman offense.

This offense is more the one Adelman had to run after Vlade and Webber left.

As for Adelman's rotations, he usually settles on 5 starters and 2, maybe 3 subs. He rarely plays his whole bench. If he's doing that how, it's likely he's just not comfortable with the starting 5 yet.

First, FTA per 36 minutes is not an accurate measure on how well a guy is getting calls, because it's not account for shot attempts/touches. If a guy is not trying to score, or perhaps doesn't even have the ball, can you blame the uniform for him not getting to the line?

In any event, Lowry's FGA per 36 has not varied dramatically, but for a guy only taking 9-10 shots per 36 minuts, 1 shot per 36 is a somewhat significant difference. In any case, here are the numbers:

    07/08: .588 FGA/FGA
First part of 08/09 (with Memphis): .593 FTA/FGA
    09/10: .591 FGA/FGA

I don' see how this is not "measuring up" in any universe.

Ron Artest shot 74% Js vs. 26% close shots as a Rocket. The year before, he shot 66% Js vs. 36% close shots. It seems the 1 less FTA per 36 mins (and per 15 shots) is entirely explainable by decreased driving. Sure, there were calls he didn't get. The same thing probably happened in SAC, too.

If anything other than his role is to be blamed, it's either (1) his injuries hurting his jumping ability, (2) Yao Ming in the paint means he gets more contests from opposing bigs.

And he was a Rocket all 3 seasons, so the uniform is not to blame.

A part of it is that Yao had less FGA under Adelman-- perhaps more of an "equal opportunity" offense: going from 18.2 per 36 mins to 15 and 14.3. And his game did change as he did take some 18 footers under Adelman (especially last year) as oppose to being always in the paint for Van Gundy. He also did more of the simple 10-foot hook shot, which he got better at over the last season than before as far as I can tell, which may be a shot that isn't drawing many fouls, but goes in frequently.

In any case, there isn't any evidence to suggest that the Rockets uniform cases more screwing by refs than does, say, a Mavs uniform or a Heat uniform.

FTA/FGA is not an accurate depicition of fts per possession either. Using tha tmetric, Kyle Lowry is apparently twice more capable than Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Wade at drawing fouls.

As for Artest, theres no solid math in your post showing that his decrease in finishing inside. For all we know shooting jumpers 10% more may only correspond to a decrease of .1 or .2 freethrows per game.

As for Yao and his decrease in freethrow attempts, Yao is still primarily a paint player, he takes a couple of midrange shots from the high post but he's always done this through the JVG years as well. As for doing him doing his hook shots more, this has always been his bread and butter move, and to my eyes he's been using this the same amount he's always done. He just doesn't get calls like he used to anymore.

    Bottom line....terrible trade for rockets.

Martin is another role player and we traded a superstar for him.

Another old sac king that will be gone in a year

My bretherans! Please don't give up during wartime! The enemies have won the battle, but surely have not won the wars! In times like these we need to step up and suprise the enemy with new weapons and defensive strategies! Even Goliath was defeated by David! As the old saying goes, " Never judge a book by its cover" Oh, the enemy still thinks we are down and out, we give up height, but surely we will beat them at their own game by sending in additional troops. The soldiers on our frontline will fight until the end. Yes there will be casualities, as in every war, but we will rise to the occasion and our Commander, who faced numerous scrutiny by our fellow countrymen, will devise cunning tactics that will shock the enemy!

Sorry to break it to you but you've got Martin around for another 3 years after this one.

Me, I can't wait to see him blossom in our system. I am excited to see him next to Yao next year, it's gonna be awesome!

Haha i hope this is sarcasm. Martin just came off a wrist surgery so his FG% is definately down. I honestly don't expect him to recover his shooting stroke until after the season. I also don't know how he will play with Yao. I expect him to get a lot of open 3's, but unless he's a great jump shooter i have my doubts on everything else. See (ron artest).
