Because Sura isn't PG. He filled in at PG in ATL in a pinch. He wasn't going to be our starting PG either.

JVG liked him because he had the versitility to play PG for limited minutes but Sura is a natural 2/3.

I don't think we should sign anyone, unless its' non-guaranteed or something.

We don't want to sign someone for a whole season - Ward and Lue can share PG minutes, T-Mac and JJ can share SG minutes. Let Boki and Gaines fight hard for the rest of the minutes.

If Gaines really is a good shooter (As I've heard) there is no problem. With his size, he can be great at defending 2's and knocking down open 3's.

Why shouldn't we sign someone? We'd have more depth, and more competition. Competition brings out the best in everyone, or atleast in theory it should. I'd like to pick up Bowen, we need someone that will give us all out hustle.

I forgot about Juaqin. I really liked his game, always hustled, played D, provided energy off the bench.

I was pretty dissapointed when we let Hawkins go, he could definitely provide some minutes until Sura comes back.

See if Mark Jackson is available. He has more brains as a Point than Ward even if he is old.

Why would VG want Ward in the first place??? - he is not an effective point.

Juaquin Hawkins would be fine would be fine with me.

If they’re going after swingmen to replace Sura instead of point guards, I guess this means that Boki doesn’t figure into the equation next season.

Didn't Ryan Bowen have a big game againts the Rox this past season? Seems I recall he went off and hit a few key threes in one of the games against DEN.

I agree... as a temp solution the Hawk would be OK, but it sure would be good to get someone that could score too (beggers can't be choosers tho, and the Hawk wouild bring some needed defensive help).

Seems like we could bring in some cheap talent until he's ready.

Does this mean the Sura will be out for an extended period of time? I don't think the Rockets would look for anyone if it's just a few games at the beginning of the season.

Either way, I doubt any new signee would be anything other than depth in case of an injury. Unless it's an ex-Knick, in which case he'll probably start. :p

I guess they really don't like Gaines all that much.

Ryan Bowen is 6'9''. He's a small forward. If the Rockets are considering this guy, go ahead and book Boki for the end of the bench. Padgett is also 6'9''. I'd like to see JVG zone up the defense a bit and put Padgett in the 3 spot for a few minutes.

My guess here, is that the Rockets would be brining some of these guys to be training camp bodies/fodder and nothing more.

That could be true, but it also sounds like Sura's injury occurred shortly after signing and that it wasn't announced to us until this week. They could have begun looking at Bowen after Sura got injured, but chose not to announce either until this week when the situation became a little more clear.

Gaines isnt that great a shooter. That's one of his weaknesses. His major asset is his althleticism.

I think it is obvious that JVG is NOT counting on Gaines/Nachbar as much as many on here are hoping.

The fact they are looking for more vets tells us that. Perhaps JVG is expecting more from Nachbar than Gaines, but still you have to wonder how much faith JVG has in the younger players.

in all of this i wonder: why did we sign padgett? we are looking at a 3 (bowen) when we have boki and padgett. so i guess scott wont be getting any pt either. not behind 3 PF's, and surely not behind tmac, jj, maybe bowen, possibly johnson or glover too. oh yeah, and even boki.

if scott can't play the 3 and won't play the 4 then why did we waste our $$ on him when we could've signed bowen then, and johnson or glover now to replace sura? it wouldve free'd up a roster spot to sign a 3rd center.

With Sura down, we're down to only three guys at the wing positions, if you don't include Gaines. Even if Boki plays starter's minutes, we're in trouble if one of those guys goes down. JVG seems to prefer guys who have been proven (unlike guys like Hawkins), and it's possible that bringing in Bowen won't necessarily take minutes away from Boki. When Sura comes back though, it will be interesting to see who gets buried on the pine.

What would you want out of a 3rd center who likely would get no minutes unless someone was injured? I think Padgett would be fine as our third center. He's got decent size, can grab some boards, and knows his role on the team. Plus, he can open up the middle with his range. For third on the depth chart at PF/C, Padgett and Spoon are fine.

you are 100% correct, if we have no injuries.

i hope this doesn't happen but if yao or deke have to miss a few games, i believe it would help more to have an actual 3rd center. then get burned because we have no one taller than 6'9 when either yao or deke would sit.

im not saying that spoon and scott aren't good. i think both where very nice surprises last season, and played very well. i just don't see the need for them this season with JH and deke. last season we only had cato.

like i said before i would be very happy if scott would slide to the 3 and fill in for sura. my point is this:

we signed padgett to play the 4 and sometimes 3. well, right now we need a 3 (thats why we are looking for one) and yet we look to sign bowen. so that would make the bowen signing worthless, because we already have padgett. unless of course bowen gets the minutes...then i don't understand why scott is on the team for no reason.
