I think you you may have read about 3rd party router firmwares that supports VPN services. Not all routers have that capability new or old and not all VPN services require it. Steer clear of those VPN services that require 3rd party firmware if you're not comfortable tinkering with them. There are advantages to each type of configuration but, that's neither here-nor-there as far as streaming League Pass is concerned.

The easiest way to use VPN is to find a service that provides an application to your particular OS. Another advantage of using an app based service is being able to take whatever device to a friend or family member's household should you choose to watch elsewhere. One last thing, some VPN services may try to sell you a router that's pre-configured to their specification usually at a premium, you don't need those.

I'd rather have the Chromecast since my PC in in another room, but I bought a 30' HDMI cable from Fry's for $12.

My google tv box already lets me use my phone and tablet to control Netflix, Youtube, etc. But being able to stream a chrome tab is the selling point for me.

Now if I could only use it to stream the VLC HD streams of the Rockets.

I think its time to re-sticky the original CSN Houston thread. A few related threads have popped up recently and all the questions being asked about VPNs and League Pass have already been answered there. That thread is a really good information source and the discussion on this dongle and the article posted about CSN possibly going belly up would have fit in nicely as part of that original thread.

Soon this thread will fall off of the first page, and be replaced by a similar one as soon as it does. I just think it's a good idea to keep all this info consolidated and easily accessible. It's easier to follow and reference, and worked perfectly all of last season when a thread was stickied.

    **UPDATE**

Got my Chromecast today. The apps (Netfix/Youtube/PlayMusic) all work amazing.

Mirroring your screen to the TV...not as much. See explanation from this Android Authority article....

    http://www.androidauthority.com/html5-and-webrtc-the-technology-behind-chromecast-248968/

    Method 2: Google Cast Extension
The second method bypasses the Google Cast API and allows you to project web content to your Chromecast through a Chrome web browser tab. You do this by installing the Google Cast extension for Chrome on your computer. This method, while will be extremely popular until more applications are built using the above method, will yield different results for different people depending on their computer speed. When you’re casting or mirroring a webpage using the extension, the Chromecast loads your current webpage using an HTML5 standard called WebRTC. If you’ve heard of WebRTC before, you normally would associate it with video chatting. That’s still what’s going on here, basically. Your computer essentially video chats or streams a video of the current tab in Chrome over to the Chromecast. The video is constantly encoding and transmitting. This is why you need a powerful computer. If your computer and network can’t handle a higher bit-rate, the extension allows you to choose between 480p, 720p, and a higher bit-rate 720p to adjust accordingly.

At this time, Hulu, Amazon, Crackle and other Internet TV and movie streaming sites do not have officially supported apps. To view their content, you’ll need to cast it with method 2. Your mileage may vary when it comes to viewing this technically unsupported content. As I mentioned, depending on your computer and network speed, you may end up experiencing audio syncing issues or dropped frames.

So that's my issue. My PC is like 6 years old and my netbook isn't nearly powerful enough. My wife has a much better laptop, so when she gets back into town, it'll be interesting to see if it works smoother.

In the mean time, hopefully League Pass makes an app available. I'm sure that's what Google is working on. Amazon Video, HBO Go, Hulu, etc all with apps.

Chromecast works great with YouTube. Haven't started using Netflix yet.

However, when casting a video on my browser's tab, the audio doesn't cast; only the video. Also, the video cast on the TV lagged the audio coming from my PC.

This is typical of Google (browser casting is actually in "beta" for now) but bugs like this will get worked out eventually.

Yeah the Mirroring feature is not optimal as of now. It's not ideal to watch any kind of video on through the chrome extension.

However the netflix, youtue, etc. works well!

If you are really hell bent on streaming video from your laptop to a TV, Get a macbook (easier said than done as they cost an arm and a leg) and use mirroring via an apple tv.

Thats what i did for all of last season and it worked pretty well :)

I have one of those as well and frankly it's not practical. I assume i'm like most rockets fans that i like to be on the forums while watching a game. The cable i have is pretty long but its very expensive to get a cable that's over 7 feet. Thus my computer has to sit on my tv stand if i want to watch a game(first world problems i know )

Don't get me wrong the cable is great when you are just trying to watch a movie or something but i prefer the apple tv. But most time i find my self just using my laptop to watch the games.

Frankly i think these gadgets are just a waste of money and provide only minor convenience. If i'd do it over i wouldn't have bought the apple Tv nor the chrome cast.

    But seriously **** comcast.

That's what updates are for. I'd be shocked if something worked with 100% efficiency right out of the box. Even Apple.

Are you talking about HDMI cables? You can get a 25 ft cable for like 15 dollars

As i said "As of now" the experience is not optimal. The jury is still out on whether the chrome mirroring can be useful enough to replace an Apple TV or an hdmi cable.

Hopefully the price-point can draw developers to optimize the thing even more.

Nah i'm talking about the HDMI cable for a macbook, it has a adaptor to connect to the laptop, thus is it a bit more pricey.

In response to the original post in this thread... Don't most computers come with an HDMI port now? I know it's common with laptops and desktop graphics cards. You can just connect your computer and tv together with an HDMI and change your display settings to see the TV as another monitor. That's what I do, no need to stream.

Ignore my post, I skipped a page where this was already discussed. Obviously what I do only works if the laptop/desktop can be in or near the same room as the tv.
