I'm not sure what he was promised, but "substantial role" does not sound like starter. 15 minutes sounds a lot like "substantial role" to me.
It's only one game. But if that's an indication of his role, 15 mpg usually means at the borderline of rotation, the 8th or 9th guy. I guess I'd call it borderline substantial.

That's how guarantees work (assuming he was offered one). If it was sure thing that Wood was a definite rotation player (6th or 7th man), he wouldn't need a guarantee for a substantial role.
