Other than contracts signed by minors are not valid?

This sets a very bad precedent for private schools. In the schools defense, they will offer the diploma, but he can not walk.

Since when did public high schools require other high schools signature to attend? That sounds a bit goofy.

I was agreeing with you, not being sarcastic.

Yeah. I'm sure that when his parents drove him to the school to enroll, and they threw papers at him to sign, he read over them carefully. Furthermore, I'm sure that when surrounded by his parents and a cadre of "teachers" he really felt comfortable complaining about the rules.

Bah! Just another victim of the "raised $RELIGION child" syndrome.

Whenever my kids signed something at school (e.g. behavior policies), we were required to sign it as well.

Please note that I am not arguing the legal validity of this as a contract. I see it as more of a promise to abide by the rules that were placed in front of me.

Am I the only one wondering how the school is going to know if he has sex on prom night?

We know it didn't say suspended because the school got together after the fact to threaten him with a suspension according to the article. He didn't know what the punishment would be at time of signing said contract.

No. I would assume this is an elaborate hoax, orchestrated with the fundie school principal's help, to ensure that the guy's girlfriend makes prom night worth his while.

"How romantic; he's facing expulsion just to go to the dance with me!"

Actually we don't know what it says. Perhaps they were just trying to decide whether or not to follow a strict enforcement.

You are right. The context of which this story was written may not show the full truth, and it very well could say something to the effect of up to/including suspension. My guess though is it probably doesn't specifically mention the punishment, but rather just the crime.

I doubt this sets any kind of precedent at all. Private schools often make rules about off-campus behavior. My wife went to a nonreligious school that said students couldn't smoke or drink anywhere in a school uniform.

And, we already know that government gives schools a wide lattitude when it comes to controlling kids. The SC decided in favor of the school on the Bong Hits for Jesus case. And, there's actually a case about whether it was improper to strip-search a student for prescription tylenol (or whatever it was). So, if you're concerned about whether this contract signed by a minor is enforceable... well, the courts are not.

Their position is dumb. But, the suspension is proper.

The poor kid shouldn't have to go through this crap. I hope he dresses in cap and gown and marches up to the stage to get his diploma. He should shout out that he earned it. I'm serious. Let them throw him out if they are going to be so completely absurd.

People sign contracts that apply outside of work and school. Since we are on a basketball forum, a good example would be Jay Williams and riding motorcyles while on personal time.

Because I don't think kids can compartmentalize like adults. If they broke a rule on the weekend they'd probably brag about it first period Monday morning, and then everyone else would probably try to do it. He'd be like Prometheus.

LOL @ the hypocrisy.. Everyone is approaching the subject with great caution, no one has dropped the "they're cuckoo!" line, no one talked about how "crazy" they are.. If, however, it was a muslim school that did that, DaDa would be all over this thread screaming about how evil and crazy that religion is..
