Coming from a family of educators, including a father who was a department chair at a major Houston university for over 30 years, an uncle who retired the Dean of a college at another campus of a major Houston university, a sister who retired from teaching grade school after 30 years, has a masters degree in English, and is a successful published author, I can tell you that I find your comments highly offensive, as well as absurdly wrong. How such ignorance can exist baffles me, but that's the state of the world we live in... Texas in 2010. If someone had asked me 50 years ago if such incredible stupidity could drive the selection of textbooks in the early part of the 21st century, I would have laughed in their faces.

Blatant politics and ideology (especially when they're wrong) have no place in our school systems.

I am now under even greater pressure to save enough money to send my children to private schools since my old district, Spring Branch ISD (solid public education), falls under their sway.

Digital publishing on a large scale can't arrive here fast enough to limit the spread of this contagion to other states due to the large textbook market in Texas. If we can't save our kids, as patriots we owe it to other Americans to prevent their children from being brainwashed by this crap. Gah I'm angry

If you made all the decisions on what is taught in Texas you would be happy, but I'm sure some others would be unhappy. It's impossible to please everyone, and the people in power make the decisions.

I don't agree with most of the changes I've read about, but the people making these changes would probably say that politics has nothing to do with it. They probably believe what they are doing is 100% correct.

No matter who decides what is taught, some people will be unhappy. Is there really a way to make everyone happy all the time?

I'm no historian. I don't know what's important to teach, I only know what I've been taught.

However, there are experts in this field whose expertise and job is to determine what is important in the course of history. These are the people making recommendations to the SBOE as to what the curriculum should be. We should be using their recommendations because, well, they are experts.

What miffs me the most is that the SBOE thinks they know history better. They know what's important whereas the experts don't. That's makes me the most angry about this filth. If the current modified curriculum is what the experts had initially suggested, this wouldn't be an issue whatsoever I think.

I agree, I work with a bunch of PHD's they lack business sense but they are HIGHLY intelligent.

Don't confuse monetary success with intelligence....it is not the same thing.

It really scares me that there are people like this guy out there. These are the white supremacists of the 21st century. Where are Malcolm and King when you need them? We need someone to stand up to this injustice...

I say we spend a month in school learning about people like Emmett Till here, who was brave until his last breath. These kids NEED to understand how horrific we have been, and what we must do to move forward and move on...

And finally, some beautiful African Hip-Hop, b****...

The last gasps of a dying regime. Texas (and the country) will be a minority-majority soon and these people are scared to death of that inevitable reality and are willing to do anything to try and preserve their real and perceived power.

It won't work, it will have bad consequences, and we're all the poorer during the interim.

It's kind of amusing to watch that McLeroy douche kinda twitch and squirm a little as he tries to tell the reporters that they 'didn't swing things to the right, we swung it to the middle', like his body is rejecting the slush ejecting from his mouth.

I agree, but don't expect everything to be wonderful when the "minority-majority" takes control. The new majority will put its foot on the throat of the new minority and act equally as wrong as the current regime.

    Power corrupts.

Excellent post. The subject of debate here is valid and the changes are concerning, but as usual both sides overreact about everything, and seem to think as though no one has a mind of their own.
