Dude, he ripped off people on their death beds. That's kinda sad, but I agree 45 years is a lot. The judge must have been one old ****er.

It's easy to say he should have signed the plea bargain, but hindsight is 20/20.

one more thing..according to my knowledge, fed sentences are rarely commuted...they spent most of their punishment...most like 45 years than 38.

**** that. If I walked into a couple of banks and held them up for $5,000 each I'd be going to jail for 45 years.

This scum steals $100 million and deserves less time? Dat double standard.

White collar criminals should do time in maximum security prisons. Being used as jailhouse currency might curb stealing people's hard-earned money

You can't compare the two because one involves a dangerous weapon and pointing it at people can really mess them up for life. Also, anytime you steal from the government you can expect some serious ****.

I don't know all of the details, but this happens a lot on a much bigger scale. The difference is those guys are richer and have so much money hidden that the government is happy just getting a quarter of it through fines and bail. His friend is unethical, but he still did everything in a "professional" business environment.

Don't white collar criminals go to really nice prisons?

Should have had a better lawyer. A good one would have either told him to take the 2 years or he/she would have got him off. If there was a case against him, which it sounds like there was, always take the plea unless you can hire the dream team.

Ironically his lawyer probably told him a lie so he/she could keep on billing him for a lot more cash.

This is why so many innocent people take plead bargains. . .
    because
If you lose. . YOU LOSE BIG

I know you friend is not innocent but the difference between the plea
    and the sentence is incredible.

The sentences like this is a major THREAT that force people to accept pleas
Even if they were innocent. . . alot of people don't want to risk their lives like that

everyone says fight to the last . . .but when you look at those
odds. . . alot of people take the lesser of 2 evils

That's possible. I'm guessing the guy didn't want to do any time in jail, let alone two years. The lawyer probably didn't know how much evidence was really out there waiting to be found.

The lawyer should have realized any jury would find him guilty for screwing over ordinary people out of their money. He also should have told his client that most judges are old, therefore, they would rule out a severe sentence for screwing over elderly people out of everything they had for trusting this hot shot.

He should have stole more money.....the more you steal, the less chance you will go to jail.

The DA probably couldn't believe it when he turned down the two year deal. This sounds like some negligence on the lawyers fault, especially since everybody seems to agree he was guilty.

This thread is a joke. A guy systematically steals huge or entire portion's of old people's retirement wages, and has friend crying he's the victim.

    Please.

Just close your eyes for a second and imagine after 40 or 50+ years of hard work, you've built up a little retirement and are ready to live out your last 5 or 10 or whatever years. Granted, the next part is idiotic, but imagine you stupidly invest most of those savings with one firm, and everything seems to check out... and the boom, its all gone.

Yeah, if I was one of those victims I'd be perfectly happy with the criminals never seeing the light of day again.

It's not complicated. Its serious and massive theft. In a way that is potentially MUCH worse than a guy robbing a bank - even if said guy uses a gun. Sure, if that guy kills someone that becomes a much more serious crime... but then, stealing from old people can have live or death consequences as well.

what a joke of a thread.

I suggest you disassociate yourself from your friend immediately. You don't stick by people who are scumbags like that. Crying about how he's the victim points highlights your moral compass. If you are disgusted by the fact that someone else only got 2 years... ok, makes sense. then you should be asking how to get someone a much longer sentence.
