Most of the complaints about Simms are pretty ignorant, in my opinion, because seem to indicate a complete and total memory loss of Greg Davis' offense ineffectiveness regardless of the QB, as if the Texas offense was somehow a rolling ball of butcher knives, then Simms came in, and it stopped. It wasn't. The offense has been predictable, and has had trouble scoring against good teams since Davis started calling plays. The QBs change, the RBs change, the WRs change the linemen change. Only two things stay the same - the guy calling plays, and the inability to score against good, and even mediocre but well coached defenses. Its just you.
I always thought those spirit sticks were hollow plastic rods. I had no idea they're plastic balloons. They're pretty loud though.
Well explain to me how he is a semi-finalist for the best WR award? You're saying he's top 10 this year? He's 13th in the Big XII in yards, 24th in receptions....That's top 10 in the country?
Since I'm not much of a college football fan, could one of you tell me what will become (or has become) of Vincent Young? Is he the Horns QB of the future? Will he have to endure the same grilling Simms goes thru, or will he be better than Simms?
When healthy, only Rogers compares. Williams is not healthy now, I think that's pretty obvious. Redshirting this year, will battle Mock for the starting job next year.
Pued, If you think Simms is a good QB, then I would say you are the ignorant one. His record in big games is more important then his record agains the Baylors, North Texas, and Lousiana Lafayettes of the world. Yes he is an adequate QB, and YES, his line is questionable, as is the play calling. However, I happen to think that Greg Davis is calling a conservative game to protect Chris Simms. I am not a big Greg Davis fan, and truthfully am not that big of a UT fan. I just call it like I see it, and I see Chris Simms has terrible...no HORRID balance. If one person lays a pinkie finger on him he goes down. 6'5" 225 pounds and ZERO balance. He is amazing if he can stand in the pocket all day, but if he has to move, he is like watching the Coyote trying to catch the road runner, it just ain't happening. Simms could be like Peyton Manning, except he does not make the decision as fast as Manning, and therefore, IMHO....he will be a bust at the next level. DaDakota
What does that have to do with the crappy running game(which is, and has been my biggest complaint)? Every game we've lost since 1999 has been when we couldn't rush for more than 100yds. Every single loss. Sometimes we outperform this stat, and win the game(7 times). Most of the time, we don't. Every game we rush for more than 100yds as a team - we win. That's my beef, we run a ****ty offensive gameplan as far as running the ball, then ask our QBs to bail us out, of course, only giving them 3yd outs, or long bombs to work with, and only the long bombs three to five times a game. The only time the playbook gets opened up is when we're down big, or when the players improvise the play(see BJ's big second half catch against KSU). Complain about the QB all you want, but that's not the problem, and it never has been. Run the damn ball.
Run the damn ball. It's not like they didn't try against OU......do you blame Benson's poor performance on Davis?
Well mduke, Davis repeatedly calls the same running play and is so predictable any decent team can stop it.
yes, dear god yes. OU's defense, and their coaching is good, but not that good. Poorly designed plays, inexplicably drawn up schemes - I will easily concede that OU's defense is very, very good, but the failure of the running game in any game has its roots in the way Davis works it. OU can be run on, Alabama did it with a power game, Mizzou did it by punishing OU for overpursuit. Texas' running game makes defenses faster than they really are, because it never makes them make decisions. The ball is given to the runner, and the LBers fly to meet him, disregarding their assignments. why? Because Texas will NEVER punish defenses for their recklesness. We don't force players on the defense to make any kind of read, or to stay at home in their assignments - because there are no repurcussions(like say, a 30yd run) for failing to follow them. Because we eliminate this part of a LBers duties - we allow them to attack the ball a second or so faster. We make the defense faster than it really is - every team we play, because of our scheme - has the team speed of FSU's defenses, circa-the mid-90s.
When you are the driver for the Ferrari formula 1 team (faster, better handling car than everyone else), higher expectations are not neccessarily unrealistic. I think this logic applies to Simms. You have NFL or borderline NFL talent at skill positions and the line around you plus a great defense for a couple of years, that should translate into a dominant era of college football. He didn't have to be great, all he had to do is be a Ken Dorsey, Gino Torreta, type guy (solid, try to to make the big mistake), and he would have been immensly successful. I don't think it is his fault, maybe he doesn't have the mental tools, natural reactions or insticts to be the steady if unexceptional field general that Texas would have been better with.
From everything I hear, it seems like Greg Davis is the 1st bad offensive coordinator in history. There have been plenty of big-name players who, in spite of their idiot OCs, have been able to win and succeed.
I don't know if you're bieing sarcastic enough, because I think you're not fond of the university. But, go up and down UT's roster, and I think you'll find they are very talented on both sides of the ball. Something, whether it's coaching or just being Texas, makes them lacsadaisical. But, everyone was after most of the people on the UT roster when they were in high school. They beat alot of people (not just Stoops) for their recruits. To me, that means the coaching isn't up to par. What a Stoops or Butch Davis could do with the UT roster. But, then again, I know you're not fond of the university. Oh, and I think Simms is somewhat a part of the problem on offense. But, everybody else on offense are mere victims.
Players from the UT starting offense whom I feel will play in the nfl for at least 2 to three years: Benson, Simms, Dockery, Scott, Williams , BJ, Thomas, and maybe Edwards. Check out last years UT defensive starters who should play in the nfl: Tubbs, Redding, Thornton, Vasher, Babers, Brooks, Jammer, Lewis. That's 8 out of 11, excluding the backups. UT is OSU II.
