I'm not sure about that - by all the reports we have, the Titans agreed to take care of CJ this offseason if he reported last season (which he did). They've supposedly offered to make him the top paid RB; reports say he wants to be one of the highest paid at any position. *If* that's true, then I think most people would reasonably say that the Titans are doing their part.

It doesn't make a lot of sense for a crappy team to make a running back one of the highest paid players in the NFL. I don't think that's at all a reasonable request from CJ, if true.

The Titans and Johnson have been far apart on an extension, even though Tennessee officials have said they are ready to make the three-time Pro Bowler the highest-paid running back in NFL history. However, sources have told ESPN NFL Insider that Johnson wishes to be paid as one of the top playermakers -- not just running backs -- in the NFL.

League sources have told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Johnson is seeking a deal that would pay him $39 million in the first three years, a $13 million average, which would place him in that elite status he is seeking beyond the running back market.

If Adrian Peterson makes around 11 mill this season, I don't see an extra 2 mill as "far apart". Meet in the middle. Of course that doesn't account for the signing bonus negotiating, which is far more critical to someone like CJ than the life of the contract.

Come on CJ just sign the damn contract for Fantasy football players sake. More importantly there's no reason to be greedy if you're going to be the highest paid RB. In closing you owe us for a sub-par year (for your standards) last year.

They are "willing" to make him the highest paid RB, but they haven't extended him an offer at all. They haven't done their part and I would go as far as to accuse them of being cheap and trying to weasle out of giving him a contract he deserves.

I agree he's asking for too much, especially since he didn't come close to matching his 2000 yd season last year.

They are willing to make him the highest paid RB, yet won't extend a contract unless he reports to camp?? You don't need to be in camp to get that offer. Granted, we have no idea who is lying and who is telling the truth. But we do know they told Finnegan the same bs (report and we will get a deal done) and then they crapped on him when he got there. So I'm not putting much faith in what the Titans are saying, mainly because I know if you want to make an offer in 2011 it's quite easy to do that (phone, fax, email, text, etc).

Count me as a Titans fan willing to trade him. It all depends on the price, but that is a lot of money to pay a RB. They take such a beating.

Yeah, this is one year I would be scared to draft him. Rookie QB, defenses will stack the line, lots of blitzing. I pick Rice over him this year in all honesty.

and i have yet to see a team give a player more money after a season as a way of saying thank you if a player outperformed his contract. it's fairly well understood, especially in football with non-guaranteed contracts, that salary is set for a year and each year's salary is based on expectations. expectations that may be underperformed or overperformed. that performance then tends to affect the following year's salary and so on and so forth. no one gives back and gives out more than the current year contract stipulates.

as for chris johnson, what does his signed contract have to do with using leverage? i'm not familiar with the exact language of his contract, but i'm guessing it doesn't say that if he doesn't play football, he goes to jail or is put to death. it probably just says he doesn't get paid. much like an owner might have recourse in cutting an underperforming player, i'm pretty sure the player has the right to not play football and not get paid. just like a player can retire during a contract if he wants and the police aren't called in to force him on to the field. if chris johnson is cool with not playing football and not making hundreds of thousands of dollars (or millions of dollars if he never plays again), good for him. if the titans are cool with explaining to their fans that one of the best running backs in the league won't be on the field for them this year because they don't want to give him more money, good for them. my guess is neither side wants either of those things and thus will try to work something out.

in a sport where contracts are essentially understood to be year to year agreements and renegotiations are considered common (and expected) practice, holding someone up to a standard of integrity based on not renegotiating future years of their contract doesn't make much sense to me. it simply doesn't jibe with reality.

CJ is trying to break the mold for RB contracts.

But it's not going to happen.

Nobody is going to pay a flameout position like that franchise QB type money.

Titans' owner and GM are both on record saying they are not going to make an offer as things stand

Adams: won't make an offer if Johnson is going "to have an attitude"
Reinfeld: no point in making an offer with sides so far apart

Titans need to get serious, put a deal on the table with a meaty first 3 years in it, and move forward.

    It's over.

    http://nfl.si.com/2011/09/01/chris-johnson-reaches-deal-with-titans/

The Titans will have Chris Johnson in uniform for the start of the season, after all.

Johnson, who had been locked in an ugly standoff with Tennessee over his contract, ended his holdout Thursday by agreeing to a reported four-year, $53.5 million deal with $30 million guaranteed.

Johnson previously signed a five-year, $12 million contract after being drafted in 2008. Since then, he’s accumulated more than 4,500 yards rushing, 1,000 yards receiving and 38 total touchdowns. He sat out the first three weeks of the preseason and all of training camp while waiting for a new deal. He also threatened a holdout before last year, but ultimately agreed to a revised deal that gave him a slight pay raise. Johnson sought big dollars then, too, the Titans were hamstrung by rules for the last year of the collective bargaining agreement.

Johnson will not play in Tennessee’s preseason finale Thursday, but should be on the field for its Week 1 game at Jacksonville.

The 25-year-old Johnson topped the rare 2,000-yard mark in the 2009 season, then followed it up with a 1,300-yard effort last year. No running back in the NFL has rushed for more yards since 2008 than Johnson.

The deal comes just one day after Johnson took to Twitter to chastise “fake Titans fans” for criticizing him during his holdout. Any ill will stemming from that incident will likely be water under the bridge now with Johnson back in the fold.

That is a lot of money for a 4 year deal. I wonder what the structure is,

Now to see how well he was working out - he's got a week and a half to get in "football shape." Still think he's a high risk for pulling something after missing the entire preseason, but he's got some time.
