When I think of Christianity, the first thing that comes to mind is judging other people.

Eh - everyone judges others. On appearance, intelligence, etc. Atheists have no problem judging and mocking Christians or other religions either, as we've seen plenty on here in D&D.

When I think of Christianity, the first thing that comes to my mind is Alaskan King crab legs.

It has nothing to do with religion, I just love Alaskan King crab legs, so I'm thinking about them a lot of the time. They are my favorite food.

Oh come on, seriously? It was tongue in cheek or, rather, maybe I just broke Poe's law.

The point is simply that christians are rather pointedly not supposed to do that. So defining yourself as christian based on a stance of judgment (as Broussard is doing) is rather ironic. There is a fine line to walk here (because you should not be ambivalent to sin either), but embracing the sinner, the "outcast", is very specifically part of what Jesus taught.

Broussard could have said any number of things to convey his point and his beliefs and still welcome "Zacchaeus" Collins, but he specifically chose to demarcate instead...and that's where it goes all wrong.

    Sorry - my bad!

I agree with that - I think Broussard failed in a number of ways in what he said as far as living as a Christian, to the best of my knowledge.

I always get a good laugh when the religious types whine about having something they dont like "thrown in their faces" when they do it EVERY DAMN DAY with their beliefs.

Hey, I get it, you want to believe in a particular religion....go for it, enjoy...doesnt bother me a bit.

What bothers me is when you ASSUME everyone should follow your beliefs and live by your religion's rules. Newsflash guys, not everyone is christian nor do we desire to live by christian dogma.

Keep your beliefs to yourself and don't take away rights of folks who dont believe in your god and his supposed rules. Gay folks have the right to live their lives the way they see fit....if you are right, and it is indeed a sin and there is an afterlife, they will be shown the "error of their ways" when the time comes.

One last point....it is not a choice. Why would folks CHOOSE to be discriminated against, beaten, harrassed, denied the same rights as straight couples, etc? It's been said several times already, but the point about not choosing to be straight hits home on the logic front. I dont ever remember saying "Gee, that guy looks good and that girl next to him looks good....let me choose which one I want to be with."

I was just attracted to girls from the get go...my cousin(the only gay family member I know of) would never go out with the girls who chased him(he was a good looking guy) and I couldnt understand why....it was because he was not attracted to them. He didnt make a decision that would have surely led to many ass-whippings in rural Kansas in the 70s. Thats just who he was.

The rest of this crap is just noise....gay folks aint hurting you and why should you care if they are sinning in your eyes....Im quite sure they dont care.

"The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the
arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it."

    George Bernard Shaw

Everyone has a preconceived notion that what they believe is correct.
I am not in favor of the homosexual lifestyle but do understand that
everyone has the right to live their lives as they choose. I also understand
that no amount of rhetoric will change ones viewpoint especially when that
rhetoric is exchanged with sarcasm and hatred!

It's pointless to bring out scripture to a person who does not believe in the
scriptures, as it is pointless for a person who doesn't believe in scripture to
think that I will abandon my belief.

This topic has been discussed/argued by far more intelligent people and for
longer periods of time and has resolved nothing!

Broussard should have known that in today's media, you can't go out and just speak your beliefs. I respect him for coming out and actually just sharing his opinion on the matter though. i think it's foolish to insult Chris for HIS opinions. A gay man wouldn't want a Christian to tell him he is going to hell, so it would be nice for a Christian to simply state his beliefs without being called a fanatic, hater, stupid, or foolish.

With that said, I realize homosexual marriages are going to be legalized in a matter of time. There's no stopping it, the American people are turning left on that subject. And it is what it is. There's very little Christians can do about it.

But whatever, abortion is legal, sex before marriage is legal, and a whole lotta stuff that is sin is legal. As a Christian, the only thing I can do is not do that stuff, and pray that our Churches aren't forced to do anything out of their will.

Broussard pretty much did exactly that, only without using the dreaded reference to Gehenna.

It would also be nice for gay men and women to be able to openly state they are attracted to people of the same gender without being labeled a degenerate and sinner.

Broussard isn't calling him degenerate, and he is calling Collins a sinner in the same way that heterosexuals commit fornication or any other sin. It's ridiculous. I don't think most people understand that Christianity believes that ALL men are sinners. Liberals get way too caught up in these comments.

If all men are sinners, why are Christians so riled up specifically about homosexuality? Clearly, not all sin is viewed at the same level.

Well, by the same token, one could say all men are stupid/ignorant to varying degrees. And Broussard is just especially so in this instance.

I would agree in a general way about some Christian criticism of homosexuality. I think Broussard's 'open rebellion' characterization gives it a different vibe. Using that language evokes the idea of continuous sanctification through the Holy Spirit, which I've seen in Christian thinking as a justification to think that Christians may be sinners but they are not as bad as the unbelieving sinners. The Bible is teaching something like that, with the nonbeliever being dead in sin, and the Christian being made more holy, but I see bad manifestations come out of that line of thinking, including an us-vs-them sort of mindset in some Christians. And, I kinda get the vibe from his comments that he's speaking from that paradigm, thinking that he himself is a sinner, but he's not in 'open rebellion' so he's okay, whereas you can see those other sinners are in open rebellion from the fruits of their sin and can't be true Christians like him who is 'trying to do the right thing.' And he has Biblical teaching to undergird that (if interpreted in that way), except that it isn't his place to say who is Christian, and that Collins didn't say he was a Christian anyway, and that the problem with open rebellion is the rebellion not the sins committed in rebellion, and that his own hidden rebellions are really no better than open rebellions, and that really and finally ESPN is a terrible forum for that conversation in the first place.

People like Chris Broussard don't take the time to label just anybody as a sinner on national TV.

Actually there are many animals that mate with the same sex since they are hermaphrodites and are all one sex. Some species like clownfish change their sex. Leaving that aside in many animals sex is not purely for reproduction and plays a role in reinforcing social bonds. That is very true of humans where the vast vast majority of sex doesn't lead to reproduction also consider that unlike some animals we don't have the urge to have sex only when conditions are ripe for procreation.

Homosexual relationships among animals most like play a role in social bonding and group dynamics.
Here is an article on that subject.

But their is no belief structure with atheism. You can't call atheists hypocrites for judging others because its not part of their "creed" or what ever you would like to call it. Christians time and again say its part of their belief system to not judge others yet they do it all the time thus they are hypocrites.

Wow that makes so much sense. They are two totally different subjects. Once again stop trying to equate things that don't have anything to do with each other. I don't believe that being gay is natural or morally correct. Being gay does not affect me I just don't agree with it. Being black, white, brown, yellow red or whatever isn't a choice.

So I guess sterile hetero couples are going against nature and are sinners:confused:

If you want to use science, homosexuality is actually the least cruel form of population control.
