I don't think good Chinese food comes in places with a fancy atmosphere.

Gourmet? Man. Almost impossible. I'll try to ask around.

I will recommend Hong Kong Chef on Bissonnet near 610.

Here's the clue I'll give. If a chinese place can make it without delivery, you know they should be good.

To be fair, just go to Tokyohana and say it's Chinese. Chances are she's too stupid to know the difference anyway.

This is sadly true. If you want genuine Chinese cuisine, you'll probably end up in a place full of loud people who never shut up.

If you want a fancy place, you'll probably get stuck with some generic Westernized food.

I rarely eat Chinese anymore. We're in Houston, and there are SOOOOO many good Vietnamese places.

Arco Seafood on Bellaire has really good authentic Chinese food and has a pretty nice atmosphere as well. They have a really good seafood selection.

Not sure if it's still around, but I remember there was a Hunan Restuarant(original one?) on Post Oak that's pretty fancy. At least the prices are way out of my league.

I only rank Chinese restaurants by how much I like their food, and their overall bang for the buck. So yeah, they tend to be all crowded tables where you have to shout to make conversation.

Fancy Chinese food is an oxymoron

Fu's Garden in the village is a decent option, though. Not super fancy, however

Hasn't always been this way in Houston. Back in the day Uncle Tai's was the second toughest table in town (after Tony's). I had my wedding rehearsal dinner in a private dinner room at Dong Ting - a fantastic seven course feast that was a major success. Too bad nothing like those places exists in Houston today.

^^^repped. Get the cantonese style beef filet. Very tender beef filet that's sweet. Destroys any other beef dish you could get at any other decent chinese restaurant.
