Wrong. You have potentially offended the majority of educated Americans yourself. You are making an assumption. So, you'll just assume he should know better, therefore, he must have meant some form of insult by saying it. Sure.
You accuse others of labeling Stockton as a racist by assuming, yet you assume that Stockton used it only to refer to Yao's country of origin. Only Stockton knows his intentions, and he'll never admit that it was a intentionally racist remark, if it was. Either way, Stockton and TNT should definitely acknowlege this situation, if anything apologize for not recognizing the term "chinaman" as being offensive and having it aired on nationally televised TV.
the sad thing is that without a retraction of the statement.....there are millions of viewers around the world....who still think thats an ok thing to say.
That's what the email address was for. But lets hope you don't email him with a "angry, pissed off, want him fired" type email. He does not deserve that.
Just in the big cities... there are way more asians in the bay area, and orange country than in central and north northern cali. In Cupertino, Asians make up 42% of the population... in Fremont, more than 50% are asian. All around the east bay, south bay... and all the way to San Jose, the asian population is dominant. Just look at the University of CA system... in each school, asians make up the largest ethnicity... I think the only school where whites outnumber asians is UC Santa Cruz.
Yes but he used an offensive racial slur. Your example of Mexican is poor. Mexican is not an offensive term. "He is Mexican." "He is Chinese." "He is a Chinaman." One of those doesn't belong. Mexican can be used offensively, yes. But the term Chinaman is by DEFINITION offensive. Can you not see the difference? Intent is not the matter at hand. If he did not mean to be offensive, that is fine. He should just apologize and move on. Frankly it is the dismissive reactions from the posters here that is more infuriating.
What you say is true, I myself wouldn'nt use the term. But obviously Kerr didn't know better. He'd probably equate that with calling AK47 the 7 foot Russian.
Oh, come on... Pleaseeeeeee.... Ok, I'm assming he's innocent. You are assuming he's guilty. Which one is reactionary?
Nice cheap shot. The fact remains, you are ignorant about the issue at hand. There is no denying that.
I am not accusing him of being racist, I just want to say he's ingorant. Have you seen Jackie Chan's movie "Rush Hour", Jack said what Carter said (the N word) to some Afican Americans in a bar and got hammered. In that case Jack didn't know what he said meant, but still hurt people's feeling and got hammered.
Both of you are. His use of a known offensive racial slur is pretty indicative of either his ignorance or his racism. Both are in the realm of possibility.
wow you assume too much, personally, like you, I assume he's inocent out of ignorance not out of racist intentions. Re-read my post, are you getting too worked up that you're not reading carefully? <==not trying to offend you, just noticing you're using a lot of "!!!!!"
I'll take your word for it, about the origin. Fact is though, it's not widely known. I'm glad that such riots haven't taken place, it just shows immaturity imo. I don't believe anyone is suggesting that the Asian community is immune from racial issues. Dick Stockton will likely make right on this, in a professional manner. I would hope the community acts the same.
Yes. I see the difference. But I want you to see the difference too! You watch Stockton. You listen to Stockton. You see him on TV. All that matters. Stockton is not a mean person. But if Stockton was know to be a KKK member, then you've have a case. But to expect the worse of him is reactionary.
I did a college research paper last semester on the California Gold Rush and how many of the Asians immigrated here and became wealthy off the miners. California has a huge asian population, but still i don't know of any asian politicians, they don't hold the same political ground as hispanics/african americans.
I agree 100%. I'm learning more all the time. What I don't agree with from other posts, is the overreacting, and the calling for the guys job, bla bla bla......it was an honest mistake.
