Nomar, do you see the double standard there? It's like a landmine for TNT to step on. Country of orgin is ok to use for every other contry except China? Do you see what PC has done?
America is a magnet to cultural diversity. There are people populating this country, from all over the world, like no other. I agree that in this situation, you and others should make it known that that is offensive. But by saying a "big deal", this appears a little vague. What would you like to see done? Riots in the streets? Marches and protests? I hope not.
HE SAID CHINAMAN?!? Well I don't think it's appropriate...racist...I wouldn't mind someone saying that in real life though. I think someone needs to like voice their concerns or something though. CHINAMAN?
Hmm..well he should be fired or apologize! What if a commentator said the N word or any other explicit word...Chinaman is okay?
You call someone from China a Chinese. Chinaman is a offensive term coined in the 19th century that is extremely racist. It is not to be used lightly.
That's what I'm talking about. Stockton or Kerr, whoever said it...he's not a racist. He stepped on a politically correctness land-mine!
Exactly! He should be fired! He makes so many mistakes anyways..very dumb..we should make a list of all the incorrect stuff they stated... Hmm..what if you called a Hispanic man a Latino man?
hkmovies and others; I think y'all aren't up with the history of the Chinese in American while yes 'Chinaman' literally means a man from China but there is far more history to that. It goes back to the building of the transcontinental railroad when it was used by whites to denigrate the Chinese who worked on the railroad. That's where sayings like "A Chinaman's chance" or "Chinese fire drill" came about because the first referred to how many Chinese died building the railroad and where considered expendable "worth less than the track ties" and the second meant that Chinese were so stupid that they would run back into a burning building. Just to say well its not offensive because it simply refers to a man from China is the same as saying "Darkie" isn't offensive to African Americans because they have dark skin.
Before to many word-bombs of various origins get thrown around... I personally would never use the term, but if someone does say it I wouldn't jump all over them unless I knew for sure they were being racially derogative. To blow this all out of proportion to obtain some sort of hero status is pretty ridiculous IMHO.
What about that other dude...who said Donovan McNabb was a starting quarterback because he was black..why did he get fired?
You are over reacting. People are well aware of the N word and it's meanings in this country. This country DOES NOT know about the C word, hell, we hardly even know anything about Chinese culture. We DO know that the mainland grew one big side of beef. I can see your point and desire to have the word get out that the Asian community finds the C word offensive. It has to start somewhere. But it shouldn't come to a hate fest and lynch mob mentality. Dick Stockton meant nothing by it. If he is confronted about this and the situation is explained to him, then I'm sure he will apologize. Demand his job AFTER this is brought to his attention. Would you rather have an honest apology, or one brought about from threat of unemployment?
