Check the dictionary. Just because you're ignorant to the term doesn't make it any less offensive to Asian-Americans or Chinese people. I doubt those who are offended by this term (and I'm not necessarily offended since I'm white) are sitting around looking for a reason to get offended. I doubt they tuned into TNT last night hoping one of the announcers would utter the word.
What ever you say bro, but it's not me raising hell over this, and I'll call it like I see it. It's only a legit complaint in the new era of thin skin and politically correct foolishness. No insult was intended by the announcer, so no insult should be taken from it. Like I said, people need to get a life. Raven
The issue is not the intent, you dig. If I accidentally reared ended someone else car, I need to pay for the physical damage. If there is no damage, at least I would have the decency to say sorry.
Then people need to get a life when Rush Limbaugh says that the media overhypes black QBs which isn't even offensive in my opinion. Right? Or is it a double standard Raven?
That's two totally separate situations. I'm not arguing either way but the comparison isn't valid. Limbaugh went out of his way to be controversial, I think we can all agree on that.
Wow, hell freezeth over! Damn TJ how does that taste? RM- Thanks for the love and a belated congrats! SJC- Meeting in person is one of my missions this year. NOMAR- Your defense has truly made my day.
It better be a screenshot of my favorite comedian holding one of my favorite actors back before the big KABOOM! That'd make a cool wallpaper.
even better ACCEPTANCE SPEECH On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to — they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much. CASE CLOSED
I think Yao would handle this situation much better than most of us have, just as he did with Shaq's poor attempt at humor last year. Yao is a class act, I hope that the comment directed at him was innocent. I also would like to hear an apology from the commentator; it would go along way towards making people feel better about the situation. Lesson learned KC
He actually called Redskins WR Alvin Garrett that and that happened in 1983. Public outcry was so great that Cosell resigned 2 months later from MNF.
THe lesson to take from these 8 pages and 200 plus posts is clear: John Stockton is a racist who hates Chinese people.
That's not what I'm talking about. I talking about "hanging people" that do say it without meaning harm...
Yeah, and every single commentary is SUPPOSED to know this? And if he doesn't then he must be bombarded by angry hate mail? Have you MEMORIZED the dictionary lately? Do you see where I'm coming from?
Yes, he should be informed of his ignorance. Every single commentator is SUPPOSED to know that 'n----r' is offensive, and if he doesn't he will be fired. Period.
Yes. But that's what Stockton meant (origin). But you automatically think he meant the "chinaman" in a BAD way. He did not. He meant it as "Chinese." Sure, there might be some people that might misunderstand Stockton. But try to be one of the people that DO understand. As more and more people do, then we'll get less and less of this reactionary response. That's a better multi-cultural America.
That's fine about him being informed. But I disagree that he should have known about "chimaman." Like if it was a common/known subject. Like if he should have been born with the knowledge. It's not like that. In a perfect world maybe. Do you at least understand how Stockton could have used the word "Chinaman" like we use the word "Frenchmen?" Do you at least see how he could have made that honest mistake?
Your excuse is lame. If he learned the word from 'Frenchman', then he would have used 'Chineseman'. As old as kerr/stockton is, he must have learned 'Chinaman' out of certain context. I mean com'on, even DS yourself knows what it means, admit it. Why try to defend an obvious mistake? People should apologize for their mistakes, whether intentional or not.
