IIRC, a few years ago, the Chinese team actually lost to the Koreans in one of these Asian tournaments, and the last time they played (last summer?), China barely won with Yao playing the entire game. So over the last year, either the quality of the Korean team has dramatically decreased, or the Chinese team has dramatically improved, or a combination of both.
That guy to the bottom right looks like he's wearing a neckbrace? Man Yao..take it easy on the guys will ya!!
That is their starting center, who made 3 3ptrs in 1st quarter. South Korea actually won the 1st quarter.
If Yao stays in Houston for training instead of playing in these tournaments, he will improve much faster and therefore: 1) The Chinese fans and the Chinese Basketball Associations should be happy because their goal to get a medal in the 2008 Olympics will be one step closer. 2) Houston fans should be happy because their goal for a NBA championship will be one step closer. 3) The other Chinese players on their NT should be happy because they will have more playing time. 4) The other teams in the tournament should be happy because they will have a better chance when face the Chinese team. 5) The fans should be happy because the games will be more competitive and exciting to watch. Looks like it's a win situation for everyone.
The guy looks bigger. That settles it, with Swift in there, Yao is gonna blow up. I'm picking him first round in my draft
There are some injuries on the S. Korean team. But the biggest factors are a) Jonas Kazlauska - one of the best international basketball coaches, the best in this tournament by a huge margin. b) significant improvements the Chinese players have made, esp. Yao Ming. Yi Jianlian(PF) and Sun Yue(PG) will be NBA-quality players(mid-late 1st rounder) if they continue to progress under top quality coaching.
Check this out. The 6th is hilarious. http://bbs.sports.sohu.com/lianzai/lzr-12281-119096-1126832911.html
I personally think Yao should do this more to the refs when he's called for a phantom foul... especially if the Rocks are in Dallas...
He's been banging guys a lot in this tournament. Except that he's gotten a few offensive foul call for his trouble. With his improved upper body strength, I expect him to be much more physical on the low block this year. Not quite Shaq-like but definitely improved.
