I thought I'd recap all of Yao's fouls. Like I said, two of them were offensive fouls off rebounds: The second offensive I guess I cannot say 100% whether it was an offensive because they did not show the replay. But from what I saw, Yao was established right under the basket and jumped straight up. Yes there was body contact, but it's unavoidable when fighting for boards. So in my opinion, it shouldn't be a foul, and definitely shouldn't be one by NBA standards. The first one though they did show a replay and it was CLEARLY not a foul. Yao was also established right under the basket. I don't think Bogut was in the game. The only Aussie play in the picture (don't remember who it was) looked to short to be a 4 or 5 and was at least foot and half from the basket due to being muscled out by Yao. A Chinese shot bounced off the right rim. Yao and the Aussie player both jumped side ways to try to grab the board (Yao to the right, the Aussie player to the front and left). Due to Yao's bigger body mass, it knocked the Aussie player out of the way in the air. No hand action (Yao grabbed the ball with both hands), no elbow, no nothing. Like I said, I don't see how this could be a foul considering both jumped sideways, unless you are saying bigger players should avoid contact as much as possible. The third foul was the dumb foul against Bogut when he has Yao beat. The fourth one was right after Yao got hacked by Bogut on a spin and dunk and tried to come right back. It was a typical p1ssed off Yao power move. However, unlike Shaq's moves, Yao's back was to the basket and he did not turn sideways and lower his shoulders. Having been backed two steps already, I also am pretty sure Bogut's feet weren't clearly set when Yao made his power move. Now, I guess I'd be fine with it if they called that both ways, but like the NBA, they are calling the two teams by completely different standards, especially considering that Yao just got hacked on the previous play. Also interesting is that after Yao dominated the first quarter and got 6 FTs early, the refs seem to say "OK that's enough for you" and didn't give him another for the rest of the game. Other than fouls though, I think I MAY have found proof that JVG asks Yao to show on PnR's. IIRC, China was playing a 1-3-1 zone and all the Aussie players were on the perimeter. Yao all of a sudden wandered above the 3 to almost right at the FT line. The Australian player at the baseline was then able to make a beeline to the basket for two easy points. Here's how it happened. The Australians were running a high pick and the Chinese high man was trying to run around it. I thought Yao subconsciously tried to show on the pick.
I think you misunderstood me. I think Australia is a very good basketball nation. You can tell the distance between them and 2nd tier teams like China from their defensive rotations. But the reason I said I don't think they sent their best team is because in this competition, they sent (if I'm not wrong) many young players whereas some veterans that are better may not have played. As for Bogut, I still think he should have tried to dunk and draw the contact from Yao. Give credit to Yao to for actually remembering that he's more valuable on the court with 5 minutes left and stood flat footed with arms straight up.
have been away from the boards for a couple of days. From what I've been able to ascertain Australia got off to a slow start and coach Goorjian reckons it was due to a bit of a "hangover" from the win over France. http://gaze.com.au/html/s02_article/article_view.asp?id=2505&nav_cat_id=-1&nav_top_id=-1&dsa=189 Regarding all the jazz on this thread about Ming owned Bogut (or did he?) ... all I have to say is - well, he should shouldn't he? Bogut's still finding his feet as Pro player. Ming has been called the next Shaq as far back as 2002. He's also got like 5 or 6 inches on Andrew aswell. Australia's team is lacking some of our more experienced guys. Players such as Matt Neilson, David Anderson and the injured Chris Anstey. All 3 just mentioned are imposing big men who have probably twice the ability of say, a Wade Helliwell who's taken his place with them out. This is by far our most inexperienced side we've sent to an Olympics/WC's for probably decades. But with that said I think we've got a chance to make an impact. We did beat the French so...
Well I don't think you really need to find proof that JVG wants Yao to show on P/R's. It's pretty apparent that his defensive system calls for all his big men to do that, let alone Yao.
How Goorj still has Helliwell in the squad I will never know The world champs could be break out time for Newley, if he performs well here I expect him to nominate for the nba draft once again and follow through with it.
people's, this is my grand debut post!!! being an aussie i thought it would be perfect to comment on this thread. aussie rocket summed it up nicely, key bigs are not in the boomers team at the moment. infact, there are really only 3 maybe 4, if you include bogut, who would be considered seasoned international campaigners. the coach in my opinion has no idea how to coach an international style of basketball. he's a great domestic coach, but after some of the boomers performances, rotations, and schemes, im not sure if he has it internationally. i think his quote says it all, bogut got his touches and his points primarily when yao was sitting on the bench. im not sure if yao owned bogie, but he is the only real quality big on the boomers roster...
Oh ok. as for bogut not being enough aggressive, thats the kind of pressure yao due to his imposing physique does creat.
looks like some of the posts got pulled by the admin. Wonder if that poster got banned too. He deserved it.
4 assists. I guess thats the range yao is capable of with good shooters. I dont see why he cant average 5 a game with the rockets. imagine 22 pts-11 rbs-5 assists -2 blocks per game. what a line that would be. KG numbers.
welcome to the boards. the more Aussie's the better. I think there are a few of us about... maybe somebody should start a thread for all Australians to come out and identify themselves.
NOP.....not yet back to full prowess and fitness. He admitted he has over-estimated about himself that he is ready to be back with a bang....and he is trying hard to get back to his top competitive form. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=2457882&postcount=714 If we look it from a positive side, if playing at say 60 ~ 70% of his old self, he is already 21 points/10 rebounds/4 assists/2 blocks in 24 minutes of play, what will become of him when he returns to 100% ??
