I want to claim that Yao Ming is already one of the best players in the world, from his performance in the World Championships. His PPG is 21, ranked the 4th; His RPG is 9.3, ranked the 3rd; His Block per game is 2.3, ranked the 1st; His Shoot Percentage is 75%, high on the top of the world (the 2nd highest is Gasol at 60%). He is the only player that ranks top 10 in all these four categories. To be realiztic, his turn over per game also ranks top 5, and personally I think there is where he needs most improvement: pass quicker, and shoot quicker. Any thoughts??
He could have been 1st in points if it wasn't for those bad circumstances he was under. P.S- Yao's American friend Teyo Johnson, he's good... he's real good. He's on ESPN 2 right now.
ltgt, I agree that those stats are very impressive against the world competition, but the NBA test is the best test of his abilities. He will have an opportunity to have passes fed to him by quality guards, something he obviously has not experienced playing in China. And he will have these same gaurds to pass back to as cutters, which will be new to him. It will be incredibly exciting to watch the teams growth as they get used to each other. I feel that in a few years, this team will be the standard by which all others are measured.
I agree that Yao Ming is a great player. I do think that his stats are bolstered by the fact that he is far and away the best player on his team. Teams like the US, Yugoslavia, Argentina, etc. have severalgood players so not just one player is doing everything. Thanks for posting the stats. Could you please post the link to where you found them? I would be interested in checking them out. Thanks.
I disagree with the statement "he's the only great player on the team so he had to put up big numbers". In the NBA there are bad teams yet you rarely see dominant numbers. You see good numbers, but not dominant numbers. That's because you have to have the talent to put up dominant numbers. Anybody with reasonable talent could put up 20 ppg, or 10 rpg. But rarely does a decent player on a bad team put up all-around dominant numbers. And Ming is doing it only playing 28 mpg, and getting less shots then some of the big men on the U.S.
Where those numbers are from...... go to http://www.fiba.com/ and scroll down to find the link of 'top 10 statistics' almost at the bottom right, and click it.
yao will have alot of double-double this coming season in points and rebs I am looking forward to it.
A good player on a poor team does tend to have inflated numbers--but not in the fg% category. If you are the only threat on your team, you tend to take a lot of shots, including bad shots. Not to mention, the opponent defense will be focusing on you. So it is harder to have high percentage shooting on a bad team than on a good team.
averagind 20 and 10 in the worlds is very impresive. i say yao can average 12-7 in the nba right now.
Yao's reaction after his first trip to the bathroom after eating raw jalapeno Mexican food at Pappasito's all night...
Being the best player in the team, Ming was also double or triple-teamed most of the time. Also, being the best player in his team, Ming did not get the ball as often as the best players in other teams. Lastly, being the best player may bloster the pt/game. But shooting 75% from the field is something else...
