I think Yao shooting while sitting on the floor is more effective than most of the plays we ran last season.:D

Yao hits basket while sitting on his ass!!!!

That is so awesome. I see an ESPN highlight, baby!!!!

For you physiologists tapping into this thread, think about this:

If Yao is 7'5", and 40% of his total height is his legs, and figuring his arm-reach extends around 3' above his head, just how "tall" was he when he made that shot? Probably taller than most normal sized high school ballers.

Wow! The dude is an opportunist! I love it.

This Yugoslavia team is said to be their second team. I don't think there is any known NBA player on this team.

I dare say the Yugoslav team would just about kick anyone's ass.

Question: How many Eastern European's are in the league?

Help me rank in order of all-star power.....

Peja
Vlade
Gasol
???
???
???

Also, Jello, what's up? Why is there so much talent coming from that area? The coaches teaching pure, fundemental ball?

Make no mistake about it. The talent especially in eastern europe was always there. For several reasons they couldn't play in the NBA (mainly political). I mean Sabonis was already heavily on the decline when he finally went to Portland. If he went there when he was like 20 he probably would have been in the class of Hakeem or at least very close.
Oh by the way Gasol's from spain, not eastern europe. There are still several players in their late twentys who could play in the NBA but they are too old to go over here and get used to the more physical play.
I also think that the Yugo team has a real chance against this years American team at the world's.

So other than 3-3 3pt fg for Yao, anyone has the stats for the game? I heard that Radmanovic is in the Yugoslavia roster, but not sure if he did play or not.

Gasol is not an Eastern European. He is Spanish, from west Europe. Other Eastern Europeans in the leage are Hedo from Turkey, Kirilinko from Russia, Vladimir Radmanovic from somewhere, nachbar from slovenia, tskits from Georgia, Toni Kukoc from Croatia, Peja from Serbia, along with Vlade, There are more, I can't think of any.

But not only are they good at basketball, they are good athletes overall. If you remember in the World Cup in France of 1998, the Croatians made it to the Semi-Finals and won the third place game over the Netherlands. A player on the team won the Golden Boot award for most goals scored.

Not a good sign. The centers that Ming went against werent even 7 feet tall. He couldnt dominate.

China Beat Yugoslavia 92-78 in Four-Nation Basketball Tournament

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xinhuanet 2002-07-02 23:53:06

¡¡¡¡TAIYUAN, Shanxi Province, July 2 (Xinhuanet) -- The NBA center duo,Yao Ming and Menk Bateer, led China to a 92-78 victory over European champions Yugoslavia on Tuesday at the Shuanglai Four-Nation men's basketball invitation here.

¡¡¡¡Yao Ming, who will go to the Houston Rockets as the top pick next season, stamped his domination inside with 27 points, with his national teammate Bateer, who played for the Denver Nuggets last season, added seven points in less than 10-minute plays.

¡¡¡¡The Chinese team learned fast from Monday's loss to Italy, setting up better defence and shooting more long-ranged baskets tobeat the Yugoslavian second team.

¡¡¡¡"We had only four days of practice before we came here. We are not in good shape," said Yugoslavian coach Miodrag Baletic. "But China deserved to win. They played better tonight."

¡¡¡¡"We are clever on defence tonight," said Chinese head coach Wang Fei. "European teams are different from Asians. They play more aggressive defence. We were not acquainted with such defence yesterday when we lost to Italy."

¡¡¡¡China will play Australia, who defeated Italy 79-66 in an earlier game, on Wednesday to call up the first part of the two-stop tournament. Teams will move to Dongguan of Guangdong provinceto continue the matches. Enditem

i checked from NBA.com that Dirk is 7-0, which is 2.13 meter. 2 centimeter is not a big difference.

btw, how many rebs and blocks did yao got?

I cannot see the game and only checked some Chinese BBS. I heard that all the players of Yugoslavia came to the inside and wanted to compete with Ming under the rim. It is a honor to dunk or score on the head of #1 pick of NBA. But they only had one chance to show a good success-over-#1.

The center of Yugoslavia is 7-3 or 7-2, very tall.

After yesterday's game, all the players and coaches of Italy team took photos with Ming.

Pretty scary that their coach thinks the Euro's play such ferocious defense!

Ratko Varda is a 7-1, 260 pound center from Bosanska Gradiska, Bosnia that the Pistons picked a season or so ago. He's 23 years old. Aleksandar Radojevic Is a 7-3, 250 pound big man from Yugoslavia who was picked up by the Bucks, but played for the Raptors (more info on him http://www.nba.com/playerfile/aleksandar_radojevic/ ). 27 points against Yugoslavia is an excellent effort. Remember, Yao scored this against a zone with a wider paint area.

This is very encouraging to me.
