Trump's rejection of the One China policy appears to be root cause of both the new weapon installation and the underwater drone theft.
I'd bet that Trump's antagonism towards China probably has something to do with it. Quoting from the same Reuters article he posted.
Certainly China is making sure to have its own bargaining chips. Their history shows in the face of any threat they respond with shows of force.
Are you saying that China laid claim to the South China Sea, built artificial islands, installed air base and weapons systems on those islands, and captured an underwater drone because of Trump?
The new weapon installation and the underwater drone theft.both happened after Trump phone call to the Taiwanese president.
And they both happened while the US had a really weak president that everyone knows they can push around and know that he won't do anything about it because he's a little b****. That's pretty much been the story of the last 8 years.
I learned from the Bush that Wars are good for stimulating the economy. CCP is probably thinking the same as they shouldn't build any more ghost cities. Story here is always the same. One party blames the incumbent. The other party blames the new guy. This is probably why both parties had agreed to be mostly unified in foreign policy up until 12-13 years ago. As American projection plateaus or weakens, there'll be more armchair analysts who's distrust with the establishment and elites will factor more in their voting decisions than they have in real experience.
It seems like they're both giving each other reasons to shift attention away from solving domestic issues. Trump didn't start this, but he probably sped things up with comments that can't be unread or deleted.
So he's not POTUS yet but you guys think he's making and rejecting policies LOL!!! He told the Navy to launch that drone near Chinese waters?!?! You guys are too much. We've already reached Obama's Fault status with Trump. Damn at least folks waited until Obama was actually POTUS to use the Obama's Fault meme.
Can confirm that Trump's tweets and phone calls are covered in Chinese media. I was hanging out with a Chinese friend that's studying here in the US. She got a call from her mom asking about whether she should worry about Trump and possibility of WW3 between US and China. Trump is heavily covered in Taiwanese media as well. I was watching a Taiwanese news show (Anderson Cooper 360 style show) and the topic of whether Trump would act in support of Taiwanese independence was discussed. WW3 still seems like an impossibility since neither China nor US would want to fight in a hot war. However, the US shouldn't be careless in dealing with China. Strong arming China would not work at all considering how much Chinese culture care about saving 'face' and pride. With the media being firmly in control of the government, the Chinese population can be easily persuaded to unite against the US. In an all out military or trade war, I think the US would blink to try to compromise first.
I don't really understand your point. Do you think that China only responds to active US policy (which Trump has nothing to do with), and not threats (perceived or real) of anti-Chinese policy in the near future (which Trump has a lot to do with)?
The President elect has no political experience at all, none. He has been an embarrassment and has shown a complete lack of self control. He has puffed his chest out about China numerous times. China, Russia and the rest of the world is going to challenge him every chance they get until he proves competent... because they have zero respect for the buffoon.
Why would you expect any different from them at this point? They were blaming every negative thing that would happen on Bush up until this year so now obviously they'll start blaming the next administration that hasn't even taken office yet. I mean, what do you expect? They aren't going to blame Obama for anything, hell they even did enough mental gymnastics to try and blame Republicans for Obamacare being exactly the failure Republicans told him that it would be when they gave it no support whatsoever. If you are waiting around for Democrats to actually take some blame for their own mistakes you'll be waiting a LONG time.
This is the part Trump and his team seem to not really understand. Even if both interests align in a particular instance, saving face is gonna be a thing to be respected. Can't go in with the zero sum outlook Trump has in which to win, the other side must lose. And that lost be publicly acknowledged.
Do you believe that rhetoric from the person who is going to be the next President has no consequences?
