did you not read the bolded part? what do you think they were talking about when they said "it must change"? Hummmm
I'm surprised the director admitted to it. This would NEVER happen in the US. And lip-synching for a 8 year old in one of the biggest event for the country? What's wrong with that? I mean, professional singers even lip-synch in order to not mess up. And I agree with the poster that says girls should practice not being ugly rather than singing. The former is much more important for your life.
See, I'm not entirely sure of that. The article states that they confirmed she was lip-syncing.. perhaps because someone noticed and brought it up to them? I'm not sure either way I know a lot of big performers do it, but to me that isn't the point. This is the biggest stage in the world and one of the proudest moments for China. Surely they could have found someone to sing live? I think they completely mishandled it.. if they felt she wasn't cute enough to be on TV, they should have never casted her for the part. I know Chinese culture is much different, but you'd have to think the family would be somewhat embarrassed that their daughter was too ugly to be on TV. The article mentioned Chinese bloggers being outraged.. but news outlets just take what they want from samples. Maybe someone who has seen Chinese discussion on this can relay how most feel about the decision. In the end, not really that big of a deal, I just thought it was rude / pretty interesting that China would do that. radapharoah: have you never heard of sarcasm? (re: my opening comment)
Looks like everyone is trying to dig up negative news about China and the Olympics these days. Any tiny thing can become a major international scandal.
by itself this incident is obviously tasteless and disgusting but fairly trivial. however it highlights china's obsessive desire to look perfect and in the process brutally quash any dissent. whether its death threats towards people who are attempting to peacefully lower tension during demonstrations or separatists who are called ugly disparaging names. all this is very evident from the comments of many chinese posters on the forum. this is obviously not limited to the chinese. but right now its the chinese who are in a position where their brand of ultra-nationalism could be problematic for the world. however this same nonsense is uttered by the turks who turn a blind eye towards armenia, or palestinians or russians or our own right wing trolls on this board. being critical of those on your side is a nice skill to acquire as a mature human being. it takes you far in life. it'd be nice if many of these defend china at all costs in all situations folks understood that. it enhances your credibility.
The article is pretty clear in stating that she was kicked off the ceremony after a rehearsal at the request of government officials. I have to say, that's extremely callous.
The problem isn't the lip-synching, it's kicking a girl off of the ceremony because she's not pretty enough.
What's wrong with that? I never see fat and/or ugly chicks in hollywood movies. And I don't believe I saw any fat and/or ugly Chinese chicks in the opening ceremony(athletes notwithstanding). It's a fact of life. Ugly people don't get screen time.
I think this has less to do with defending one's country, and more to do with making something out of nothing. This isn't news. At least I don't think so. Just like I never cared when Britney or any other no-talent "singers" do it.
I knew she was lipsyncing, she was off every time they showed her. I just figured she was lip syncing her own voice. Did you see the little girl they took out of it... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ot...l-over-girl-who-sang-in-opening-ceremony.html She was still a cute little girl, even though she doesn't have the same level of cuteness as the one that they ended up with. I'm disappointed in them.
You also need to learn to look at things from both side. Yes I see there are folks who defend China at all costs in all situations. But I also see there are other folks who bash China at all costs in all situations. It's really a chicken and egg question. What credibility do you have if you only allow yourself to see one side of the situation?
Also, according to the posters on here from China, since they're Chinese, we're talking about kids who look like they're 18 months.
Still talking about whether the look match the age of the gymnasts? I think someone in another thread has posted the pictures of the Japanese gymnasts and they even looked younger than the Chinese. So it's time to give up your look matching age argument because it won't fly.
