    I have heard that pigs live in absolutely horrendous conditions in the USA, but still...

    Dogs are treated differently because dogs have been domesticated throughout history to be human companions in places all around the world... even in China... whereas other types of livestock like pigs, cows, etc. have always been bred for food.

    I'm Chinese. I think its sickening that the Chinese do this.

    People used to eat "roof rabbit" (because cats apparently taste enough like rabbit that they can be passed off as such) in bad times in the USA - the following is from a book called "Handy-book of Literary Curiosities" published in Philadelphia in 1909

    [rquoter]
    Oh kittens, in our hours of ease
    Uncertain toys and full of fleas,
    When pain and anguish hang o’er men,
    We turn you into sausage then.

    [/rquoter]

    and very similar

    [rquoter]
    Oh the pup the beautiful pup!
    Drinking his milk from a china cup;
    Gambolling round so frisky and free;
    First gnawing a bone then biting a flea;
    Jumping
    Running
    After the pony
    Beautiful pup you will soon be bolony!

    [/rquoter]

    Americans used to eat all kinds of crap that nobody would touch today. The great American cookbook, "The Joy of Cooking" published first in 1931 has recipes for:

    Squirrel
    Opossum
    Porcupine
    Peacock
    Peccary
    Pigeon
    Raccoon
    Muskrat
    Woodchuck
    Beaver (with special attention to the delicacy that is the tail)
    and
    Armadillo

    Also lots of the 'not so popular' parts of traditional animals, like hearts, head cheese, sweetmeats, etc. Brains and scrambled eggs used to be a popular American breakfast.

    I said in the Girlfriend's a Vegetarian forum that its not like animals thank us for saving them. Trying to humanize the feelings of animals so we feel good about protecting them I think goes a bit overboard at times...

    But animals should NOT be tortured and killed in cruel, sick ways for pleasure. If you consider humans as animals, then its easily more understandable to treat animals better.

    Maybe they should make a consensus list of animals "Off Limits" and "Acceptable" for food, so we feel better about what we (which we'll do until the end of time, sorry PETA) kill and consume.
    We've categorized fish as okay, why not other animals.

    But once again, this differs by culture. Doesn't Islam prohibit the eating of Pork and Hindu considers cows sacred? Torturing is bad even if it makes food taste better (which is why veal should also be banned as well as most of the U.S. slaugherhouses) so I can get behind a more humane way of bringing meat to tables. But if we are talking about a list of what can and can't eat, that list will differ by culture and it'd be unfair to go just by western standards.

    I'd like to know how many people still use cook books from 1909 and 1931.

    The Joy of Cooking has been revised about 100 times and is pretty much considered the essential 'dictionary of cooking' (though it still contains the 'strange animal' recipes). A large percentage of people who cook have copies of this book. It is almost definately the most popular, widely owned cookbook in the USA.

    In fact, if you go to Kroger, at least the ones near me, they've just started selling a 'Joy of Cooking' spin off line of frozen foods. I'm not aware of any other cooking book that is popular enough to warrant licensing it's name for branding of products.
